Washington
State Department of Fish and Wildlife has been conducting bald eagle
surveys on a statewide basis since 1980.
The
survey effort was quite intense for the first decade, and has decreased
in intensity as
the eagle population has increased, so that survey dollars can
be dedicated to species at greater risk. From 1980 – 1992,
surveys were conducted in the early season (April) to identify active
nests with incubating birds, and in the late season (June) to count
the number of chicks produced. From 1992 – 1998, only the
early season survey was conducted to identify active nests with
incubating birds. The last annual statewide survey was in 1998.
Statewide
surveys are now conducted at multi-year intervals. The last two
statewide surveys were in 2001 and 2005. Additional information
is provided in some instances from volunteers who are able to watch
nests, or from other surveys that are conducted in the vicinity
of nests.
