Research Methods for Salmon Abundance Estimation

Juvenile Trap Design: Fence Weirs

  • Passively traps outmigrants
  • Most effective at trapping parr and yearling outmigrants: coho, steelhead, bull trout and cutthroat
  • Customizable to fish small creeks

PROS

  • Same weir can be used for trapping both adults and juveniles
  • Can be packed into relatively remote locations

CONS

  • Not self-cleaning: low debris tolerance requiring frequent maintenance
