Research Methods for Salmon Abundance Estimation

Juvenile Trap Design: Scoop Traps

  • Passively traps outmigrants
  • Most effective at trapping fry outmigrants: pinks, sockeye, coho, Chinook, chum
  • Customizable to fish small creeks to large rivers

PROS

  • Lack of moving parts, simple, and reliable
  • Less “noisy” than screw traps
  • Smaller traps may be packed into relatively remote locations

CONS

  • Not self-cleaning: low debris tolerance requiring frequent maintenance
