Additional public input opportunity on draft impact statement for state's game plan

OLYMPIA – A seventh meeting has been added to the list of public sessions scheduled throughout the state this month to gather comments on a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) issued recently for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) proposed six-year game management plan.

The new meeting is set for Aug. 19 at the Federal Way Regional Library, 34200 1st Way South in Federal Way.

The management plan is being developed to define the state's management of Washington game species, including deer, elk, moose, black bear, cougar, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, furbearing animals, migratory and upland birds and unclassified game animals.

The draft 2003-2009 plan calls for managing game populations for sustainable harvest, as well as a variety of recreation, education and aesthetic purposes, while ensuring healthy and productive populations.

The full list of meeting dates and locations is:

  • Aug. 13 - Yakima Valley Regional Library, 102 North 3rd St., Yakima;
  • Aug. 14 - Student Union Building #17- Lounge A & B , Spokane Falls Community College, 3410 Ft. George Wright Drive, Spokane;

Wildlife managers and biologists will be at the meetings, which are scheduled to run from 7 to 9 p.m., to discuss species-specific issues, and to take public comment on the DEIS in an open house format.

Copies of the DEIS can be obtained at WDFW offices throughout the state, or on-line at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hab/sepa/sepa.htm on the Internet.
