These reports give the results of recreational fishing for halibut in Washington state. The information is collected on a weekly basis with each week ending on a Sunday. July 1-4, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
This fishery closed on Thursday, June 14.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
The Area 2 nearshore incidental fishery reopened on Sunday, June 17. No halibut have been landed to date.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
The North Coast fishery reopened for four days on July 1-4. A total of 1,884 halibut were caught; they weighed 34,716 pounds. Of these, 271 halibut were landed in the port of LaPush. The average weight per fish for the July fishery is 18.4 pounds.

June 11-17, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
A total of 30 halibut were landed in Ilwaco this week. These fish weighed 629 pounds. The fishery closed on June 14 and is not scheduled to reopen this year.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
The inshore fishery reopened on Sunday June 17. No catch was reported on that day. The open area is that part of Area 2 south of the Queets River to 47 degrees 0 minutes north latitude and east of 124 degrees 40 minutes west longitude. These waters will be open seven days per week with a one halibut per day limit. The area will remain open until the halibut quota for this year has been taken or until September 30, whichever occurs first.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
These areas reopened for one day of fishing on June 16. A total of 203 halibut were caught on this one day. They weighed 3,924 pounds. Of these 49 halibut were landed in LaPush. The season is scheduled to reopen for four days, July 1-4. After July 4, the fishery will close. If sufficient halibut remain uncaught, the fishery may reopen for one or more days of fishing. Halibut fishing remains excellent in British Columbia waters.

PUGET SOUND- MARINE AREAS 5-13
During this week, at Port Angeles 94 anglers were interviewed with 10 halibut having an average weight of about 40 pounds. At Sekiu, 38 anglers had 9 halibut averaging 50 pounds. Puget Sound will close to halibut fishing on July 22.

No estimates of halibut catch in Puget Sound are made until the season is over. The season will close at midnight on July 22 regardless of the number of halibut caught in Puget Sound.

 

June 4-10, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
A total of 56 halibut were landed in Ilwaco this week. These fish weighed 1,180 pounds.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
The fishery opened for one day, June 6. The catch during this one day fishery was 145 halibut with an average weight of 20.2 pounds. The shallow water will reopen on Sunday June 17 until the remainder of the quota has been taken. The open area is that part of Area 2 south of the Queets River to 47 degrees 0 minutes north latitude and east of 124 degrees 40 minutes west longitude. These waters will be open seven days per week with a one halibut per day limit.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
These areas were closed to halibut fishing this week. The fishery is scheduled to reopen for one day on Saturday, June 16. The fishery will then close. The next scheduled opening is July 1. Fishing in Canadian waters is excellent, with charterboat anglers averaging 1.99 fish per trip (the bag limit is 2 halibut per day in British Columbia)

PUGET SOUND- MARINE AREAS 5-13
During this week 88 anglers were interviewed at Cornet Bay with no halibut. At Port Angeles, 69 anglers caught 2 halibut with an average weight of 40 pounds. At John Wayne Marina, 37 anglers caught one 30 pound halibut. Puget Sound will close to halibut fishing on July 22.

MAY 28-June 3, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
A total of 99 halibut were landed this week; the weight of these fish was 2,224 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 22.5 pounds.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
A total of 463 halibut were caught during the week of May 14-20. On Monday, May 21, 147 halibut were landed. The total weight of these fish (May 14-21) was 12,043 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 19.7 pounds.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
A total of 1,311 halibut were caught this week; they weighed 24,920 pounds. Of these, 104 halibut were landed in the port of LaPush. The average weight per fish through the season is 19.0 pounds.

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
A total of 119 halibut were landed this week; the weight of these fish was 2,528 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 21.2 pounds.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
A total of 434 halibut were landed this week; the weight of these fish was 8,692 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 20.0 pounds.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
A total of 791 halibut were caught this week; they weighed 15,037 pounds. Of these, 174 halibut were landed into the port of LaPush. The average weight per fish through the season is 19.0 pounds.

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1

MAY 7 - 13, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
A total of 27 halibut were caught last week and 47 halibut were landed this week. The total weight of these fish was 1,931 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 26.1 pounds.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
A total of 630 halibut were caught this week; the weight of these fish was 11,818 pounds, and the average weight per fish through the season is 18.8 pounds.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
A total of 851 halibut were caught this week; they weighed 15,952 pounds. Of these, 140 halibut were landed in the port of LaPush. The average weight per fish through the season is 18.7 pounds.

PUGET SOUND - MARINE AREAS 5-13
The fishery opens May 17 until July 22. Fishing will be open 5 days/week; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. No inseason catch estimates are available for this area.

MAY 1 - 6, 2001

COLUMBIA - ILWACO - MARINE AREA 1
The first Columbia River catch estimate will be available on Wednesday, May 16.

SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST - WESTPORT-MARINE AREA 2
A total of 413 halibut were caught this week; the weight of these fish was 7,120 pounds, and the average weight per fish for the week was 17.2 pounds.

NORTH WASHINGTON COAST - LAPUSH AND NEAH BAY - MARINE AREAS 3 AND 4
A total of 430 halibut were caught this week; they weighed 7,285 pounds. Of these, 29 halibut were landed into the port of LaPush. The average weight per fish this week was 16.9 pounds.

PUGET SOUND - MARINE AREAS 5-13
The fishery opens May 17 until July 22. Fishing will be open 5 days/week; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. No inseason catch estimates are available for this area.
