SALMON, STEELHEAD, CLAMS, oysters, crab, shrimp - these and
other finfish and shellfish are an integral part of the history
and culture of the Pacific Northwest. Today, as in centuries
past, they play an important role in the economy, recreation
and cultural identity of Washingtonians and the entire Pacific
region. Fish are also a natural wonder in their own right,
serving as a barometer of the general health of the state’s
aquatic environment.
WDFW’s legislative mandate in managing all marine and
freshwater species is to “preserve, protect and perpetuate”
fish populations and at the same time to “enhance and
improve recreational and commercial fishing in this state.”
