WDFW Sport Sampling Results:
December 29, 2003 - Janaury 4, 2004

Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Last week, 64 bank anglers kept 4 winter steelhead and released on coho jack. 18 boat anglers kept 1 winter steelhead.

Through Jan. 4, a total of 1,235 hatchery and 96 wild winter steelhead had returned to the salmon hatchery and 495 fish to the Trout Hatchery.

Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery reported the first spring chinook of the season on their Dec. 20 escapement report.

Kalama River - Through December 24, a total of 698 hatchery, 2 hatchery/wild and 46 wild winter steelhead had returned to Kalama Falls Hatchery.

Lewis River - A total of 1,184 hatchery and 15 wild winter steelhead had returned to the facilities through December 24.

Washougal River - Through Dec. 24, a total of 305 winter steelhead had returned to Skamania Hatchery.

Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - At Vancouver, 24 boat anglers (10 boats) kept no legals but released 57 sublegals.

In the Longview/Cathlamet area, 6 bank anglers kept one legal and released one sublegal.

Bonneville and The Dalles pools - No effort was observed.

John Day Pool - No sampling occurred.


Trout -

South Lewis County Pond in Toledo - 3 bank anglers with no catch.

Kress Lake near Kalama - 2 bank anglers with no catch.

Battle Ground Lake - 4 bank anglers with no catch.

Klineline Pond - Planted with 100 brood stock rainbows averaging 10 pounds each, 100 averaging 5.3 pounds each and 1,000 catchables averaging ½ pound each on December 22.

Lacamas Lake - 2 bank and 4 boat anglers had no catch.


Smelt -

Bob's in Longview reports some smelt were caught at the Gearhart Ramp on the lower Cowlitz yesterday.
