Salmon/Steelhead
Cowlitz River - Last week, 140 bank anglers kept 11 winter steelhead. Most of the catch was in the Blue Creek area but some fish were also caught near Olequa Creek. 114 boat anglers kept 15 winter steelhead and released 4. All the fish kept by boat anglers were sampled in the Blue Creek area.
January 31 is the last day to fish Blue Creek (the creek itself).
Kalama River - No report on angling success. Last Monday (Jan. 13), 160 first time arrivals and 45 recaptured fish (already handled one-time) hatchery winter steelhead were recycled downstream.
Bonneville and The Dalles pools - Boat anglers are catching some steelhead.
John Day Pool - Some steelhead are being caught.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Just downstream from Bonneville Dam, 13 bank anglers had released one sublegal and one oversized fish last week.
Bonneville Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a legal per every 4 boats last week. Bank anglers were also catching a few legals.
The Dalles and John Day pools - Slow for legal sized fish.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools - Light effort for walleye and no effort for bass in the three pools. Some legal sized walleye are being caught in John Day Pool.
Trout -
Klineline Pond - Planted with 2,500 catchable size rainbows on Monday Jan. 13. Last week, 48 bank anglers kept 21 rainbows and released 99.
Other waters receiving plants of rainbows last week:
Battle Ground Lake - 3,200 catchables, 120 brooders averaging 5.6 pounds each and 120 brooders averaging 10 pounds each.
Sacajawea Lake in Longview - 180 brooders averaging nearly 6 pounds each and 38 brooders averaging 10 pounds each.
Horseshoe Lake (near Woodland) - 1,500 catchables.
Smelt -
Cowlitz River - A commercial fisher reported catching a single smelt near the mouth of the river last week. Other than one sport fishing party just getting started at Gearhart Park, no other effort observed upstream to Kelso on Saturday Jan. 17.
Mainstem Columbia - No report currently available from commercial fishers. Little bird/sea lion activity noted in the Cathlamet/Longview area on Saturday Jan. 17.
