Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - No report currently available on angling success. During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 52 winter-run steelhead, two summer steelhead, nine coho salmon adults and two coho jacks during three days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery. Tacoma Power employees released five winter-run steelhead, one coho salmon adult and one coho jack into the upper Cowlitz River into Lake Scanewa Day Use during the week. During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 81 winter-run steelhead and two summer steelhead downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch.During the week a total of seven winter-run steelhead, three coho adults and one coho jack were released into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton, Washington. River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 16,600 cubic feet per second on Monday, January 23. Water visibility is almost three feet.

Bonneville and John Day pools - Light effort and no catch of steelhead observed.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers are catch some steelhead.

Kalama River - Good c onditions. Moderate stream flow and good "color." Good steelhead fishing in the canyon over the weekend, the majority of fish hooked were wild.

Fish sorted on Tuesday (1/17) - 89 "fresh" and 34 "recapture" hatchery winter steelhead were recycled to the lower river, while 21 wild winter steelhead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH). Also 24 steelhead were planted into Kress Lake.

Monday(1/23) - 79 "fresh" and 15 "recapture" hatchery winter steelhead were recycled to the lower river, while 49 wild winter (up to 18 pounds) and 2 wild summer steelhead were passed upstream of Kalama Falls Hatchery (KFH). Also 50 steelhead were planted into Kress Lake.

Trout -

Klineline Pond - 28 bank anglers kept 27 catchable size and 4 broodstock rainbows plus released 3 catchable size rainbows. Water level is very high. Best results are from anglers fishing in the swimming area using worms or Rapalas. Planted with 2,500 catchable size rainbows on Jan. 13 and another 1,250 fish on Jan. 17.

Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No report on angling success.

Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers are catching some legals. Slow for legals off the bank.

The Dalles Pool - Bank anglers are catching some legals.

John Day Pool - No report on angling success.

Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - Light effort and no catch observed for walleye. No effort observed for bass.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers continue to catch some walleye. No effort observed for bass.

John Day Pool - No report on angling success.

Smelt -

Mainstem lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Commercial smelt fishers have landed approximately 3,647 lbs. of smelt through January 19, including a season high 931 pounds on that date. The winter commercial mainstem smelt fishery is open Mondays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm (9 hrs) from January through March in Zones 1 through 5. Current price paid to the fishers (in Oregon) is mostly $3.00/lb. In Cathlamet, fish are being sold retail up to $5.49 for 6 fish.

Near Cathlamet, river temperature was still 44.6 degrees this morning.

Cowlitz River - No report currently available. Flows at Castle Rock have dropped to 22,300 cfs this morning.
