Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Best steelhead catches were found for the bank anglers at Blue Creek last week.

The first spring chinook adult of the 2005 season returned to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery last week. The fish returned on Thursday, January 20 and was recycled back downstream.

During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 840 coho adults, 18 coho jacks, 178 winter-run steelhead and one cutthroat trout during four days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Tacoma Power employees released 776 coho adults, 13 coho jacks and three adult steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River in Packwood, Washington during the week. They transported 44 coho adults, six coho jacks and 70 steelhead to the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton during the week.

During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled the lone spring chinook adult and 141 steelhead adults downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 9,720 cubic feet per second on Monday, January 24. Water color is brown and visibility is less than three feet.

Bonneville and The Dalles pools - Producing steelhead for boat anglers. Bank fishing effort is light.

John Day Pool - No catches were observed for the few bank anglers sampled last week. No boat anglers were sampled.


Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - 11 bank anglers sampled near Bonneville Dam and 4 bank anglers plus 5 boat anglers in the Longview area had no catch last week. 11 boat anglers in the Vancouver area released 20 sublegals.

Bonneville Pool - Bank and boat anglers are catching some legals.

The Dalles and John Day pools - No legals were sampled last week.


Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - No effort observed for either specie last week.

The Dalles Pool - No catch was found from the few anglers sampled.

John Day Pool - Boat anglers are catching some walleye. No effort was found for bass.


Trout -

Klineline Pond - 42 bank anglers kept 19 catchables and 1 brood stock rainbow plus released 91 catchables and 1 brooder.

Smelt -

25 fish caught at Mill Creek (Longview) by a commercial fisher today (Jan. 24). 12 pounds caught by a commercial fisher at Cathlamet last week. Large number of birds were observed from the Astoria Bridge to Chinook on Saturday Jan. 22.
