Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - No report on angling success. During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 201 coho adults, two coho jacks and 111 winter-run steelhead during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Tacoma Power employees released 123 coho adults, one jack and one adult steelhead into the upper Cowlitz River in Packwood, Washington during the week. They transported 54 coho adults and 36 steelhead to the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton during the week.

During the week Tacoma Power employees recycled 137 steelhead adults downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 5,910 cubic feet per second on Monday, January 31. Water visibility is two feet.

John Day Pool - Bank anglers are catching some steelhead.


Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - 3 bank and 4 boat anglers in the Vancouver area had no catch. Neither did the 4 bank anglers sampled just below Bonneville Dam.

The projected white sturgeon catch for January 2005 is a record low 100 fish.

John Day Pool - Slow for legal sized fish.


Walleye and Bass -

John Day Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged ½ walleye per rod last week. No effort was observed for bass.


Trout -

Klineline Pond - 36 bank anglers kept 37 rainbows and released 219. Since Jan. 20, planted with 5,219 catchable size rainbows.

Smelt -

Cowlitz River - 6 fish reported caught by a commercial fisher late last week.

Mainstem lower Columbia - Seals reported feeding near Abernathy (Longview) on Thursday Jan. 27.
