Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - No report on angling success. Daily limit increased to three hatchery steelhead through October from the Hwy. 4 Bridge at Kelso upstream to 400 feet or posted markers below the Barrier Dam.
During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 890 spring Chinook adults, 50 spring Chinook jacks, and 369 summer-run steelhead during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power's Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
Tacoma Power employees transported 562 spring Chinook adults and 23 jacks to the upper Cowlitz River at the Day Use Park in Lake Scanewa during the week. In addition, 112 spring Chinook adults and six jacks were transported to Packwood, Washington and released into the Cowlitz River just upstream of the Skate Creek Bridge.
During the past week, Tacoma employees recycled 96 summer-run steelhead downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch, recycled 270 summer-run steelhead to the Massey Bar boat launch, and recycled 45 summer-run steelhead to the Olequa boat launch.
River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,590 cubic feet per second on Monday, June 28. Water visibility is 12 feet.
North Fork Lewis River - No report on angling success. Daily limit increased to three hatchery steelhead from the I-5 Bridge upstream to the overhead powerlines below Merwin Dam. Emergency regulations are in effect through October except for the area between Colvin Creek and the dam which closes to all fishing on October 1 under permanent regulations.
Klickitat River - Some spring chinook are being caught near the deadline below the hatchery.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Effort and steelhead catches are increasing. Boat anglers averaged a hatchery steelhead per every 3 rods while bank anglers averaged one per every 13 rods last week. Most of the catch was observed from Kalama downstream.
310 boats and 361 Washington bank salmonid anglers were counted from Bonneville Dam downstream during the Saturday July 3 flight. Highest boat effort was found in the Woodland and Camas/Washougal areas.
Bonneville Dam steelhead counts have increased to 1,000 fish/day.
Catch rate of adult chinook (kept AND released) per angler during June on the lower Columbia: Oregon Bank 0.05 Washington Bank 0.04 Boat 0.10 Total 0.073 The boats in the gorge average 0.20 chinook per angler. Ad clipped rate has been ~50%.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia from the Wauna powerlines downstream - Closed to sturgeon retention through the end of year. However, sturgeon may be caught and released.
464 private boats and 20 charters were counted during the Saturday July 3 flight, the last day of the retention season.
Lower Columbia from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Beacon Rock - Generally light effort except in the Gorge were 73 sturgeon boats were counted during the July 3 flight. Sturgeon may be retained only on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays through July. Catch and release only Sundays through Wednesdays through July 31 and then 7 days/week from August through September.
John Day Pool - Sunday July 11 is the last day of sturgeon retention for the year in the mainstem Columbia and its tributaries from John Day Dam to McNary Dam.
Walleye and Bass -
Riffe Lake - Anglers are catching some smallmouth bass.
John Day Pool - Last week boat anglers averaged 3 walleye and over 4 bass per rod including fish released.
Trout -
Mayfield Lake - Anglers are catching some rainbows.
Riffe Lake - Anglers are catching mainly landlocked coho.
Swofford Pond - Bank anglers are catching a mixture of rainbows, bluegills, and perch.
Klineline Pond - Bank anglers are catching rainbows and some browns.
Shad -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Still a few anglers trying for shad, mostly with limited success.
