Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - Boat anglers sampled at the Blue Creek and Massey Bar ramps averaged a hatchery summer run steelhead per rod last week.
During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 718 summer-run steelhead, 413 spring Chinook adults and 28 spring Chinook jacks during five days of separator operations at Tacoma Power's Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
Tacoma Power employees transported 153 spring Chinook adults and four jacks to the upper Cowlitz River at the Day Use Park in Lake Scanewa during the week. In addition, 83 spring Chinook adults and two jacks were transported to Packwood, Washington and released into the Cowlitz River just upstream of the Skate Creek Bridge.
During the past week, Tacoma employees 198 summer-run steelhead downstream to the I-5 boat launch, they recycled 206 summer-run steelhead to the Massey Bar boat launch and they recycled 206 summer-run steelhead to the Blue Creek boat launch. In addition, they transported 109 summer-run steelhead to the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery for brood stock.
River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,500 cubic feet per second on Monday July 19. Flows may increase later in the week. Water visibility is 11 feet.
Drano Lake - Anglers are catching summer run steelhead. Boat ramp is still reported to be closed. However, boats are accumulating overnight along the bank. Nine boats counted here Sunday morning (July 18).
White Salmon River - Anglers are catching summer run steelhead though catches are still sporadic. 45 boats/float tubes counted here Saturday morning (July 17). Chinook reported rolling at the mouth in the early morning hours.
Klickitat River - No report on angling success. River was turbid on Sunday (July 18) and little angling effort was observed.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released boat anglers averaged a steelhead per every 4 rods (complete trips) while bank anglers averaged one per every 7 rods (incomplete trips) last week. Most of the steelhead catch was observed from Kalama downstream. A few more hatchery summer chinook observed in the catch last week. Catches were scattered throughout the river.
An estimated 619 hatchery adult summer chinook and 2,000 hatchery summer run steelhead were caught from the lower Columbia in June. The chinook catch was about ½ of the catch estimated for June 2003. The steelhead catch was the second highest for the month since 1984.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia from Beacon Rock downstream to the Wauna power lines - Light effort and catches last week.
Walleye and Bass -
Riffe Lake - Anglers are catching some smallmouth bass.
Trout -
Riffe and Mayfield lakes - Lots of pleasure boats out on Saturday July 17. Not many anglers out, especially on Mayfield.
