Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - Summer run steelhead are being caught by boat anglers from the I-5 Bridge upstream to Blue Creek. Some spring chinook are also being caught.
During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 564 spring Chinook adults, 56 spring Chinook jacks, four winter-run steelhead and 60 summer-run steelhead during three days of separator operations at Tacoma Power's Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
Tacoma Power employees transported 291 spring Chinook adults, 35 spring Chinook jacks and three steelhead to the upper Cowlitz River at the Day Use Park in Lake Scanewa during the week. In addition, 80 spring Chinook adults and five jacks were transported to Packwood, Washington and released into the Cowlitz River just upstream of the Skate Creek Bridge.
During the past week, Tacoma employees recycled ten spring Chinook adults and 38 summer-run steelhead downstream to the Barrier Dam boat launch.
River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,540 cubic feet per second on Monday, June 7. Flows will increase to 4,200 cubic feet per second for a 12-hour period on Tuesday, June 8. Water visibility is over 13 feet.
Lake Scanewa - Effort and catches have dropped off while turbidity has increased. Last report for the season.
Kalama River - Some spring chinook and steelhead are being caught with catches scattered throughout the lower river.
Lewis River - Boat anglers near the salmon hatchery averaged nearly 2/3 spring chinook per rod when including fish released last week. A few more steelhead are appearing in the catch.
Wind River - Some spring chinook were being caught from the coffer dam upstream last week.
Klickitat River - Some bright chinook are being caught here. Reports of good chinook fishing in the upper river on the June 1 opener.
Lower Columbia from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to the I-5 Bridge - Steelhead catches increased last week with boat anglers averaging a fish per every 3.5 rods and bank anglers one per every 6 rods when including fish released. Best catches were from Longview downstream.
Adult hatchery summer chinook may be retained from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to the Hwy. 395 Bridge as scheduled beginning June 16. Yesterday (June 6), 2,500 adult summer chinook were counted at Bonneville Dam.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia from Beacon Rock downstream - At Deep River, the average was a legal kept per boat last Saturday (June 5). Bank anglers near Chinook were also catching a few legals. Catches of legal sized fish in the gorge has slowed.
Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged ½ legal per rod when including fish released last week. Bank anglers were also catching some legals.
The Dalles Pool - The few boat anglers sampled did well on legal sized fish. Some legals also being caught from the bank.
John Day Pool - Slow for legal sized fish.
Ports of Chinook and Ilwaco - Including fish released, charter boat anglers averaged 0.9 legals per rod while private boat anglers averaged one per every 2.5 rods.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - No effort for bass or walleye was observed in the sample last week.
The Dalles Pool - The few anglers sampled did well on walleye and bass.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers averaged a walleye per every 6 rods last week. No effort was observed for bass.
Trout -
Mayfield Lake - Bank and boat anglers are catching some rainbows.
Riffe Lake - Bank anglers are catching some landlocked coho and steelhead.
Lake Scanewa - Anglers averaged over 2 rainbows per rod.
Klineline Pond - Bank anglers are catching some rainbows. A 5.5 pound brown trout was caught there last week.
Shad -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Bank anglers in the gorge averaged over 6 shad per rod while in the Washougal area the average was 5 fish per rod last week. In the Camas/Washougal area, boat anglers averaged nearly 16 shad per rod based on completed trips. Some shad are also being caught by boat anglers in the Kalama and Longview areas.
On June 3, a quarter million shad were counted at Bonneville Dam. It was the fifth highest daily count on record. The record is 520,000 fish counted on June 6, 2003.
Through June 6, 2004, nearly 2 million shad had been counted at both Bonneville and The Dalles dams.
