Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Boat anglers averaged over 3/4 summer-run steelhead per rod while bank anglers averaged slightly less than one per about every 5 rods last week. Most of the catch was found from Mission Bar to Blue Creek.

Kalama River - Hatchery summer run steelhead returns are 30% below the 10-year mean. However, fair to good catches are reported in the lower river from the Beginner's Hole to Camp Kalama. Numbers of fish should increase with the peak typically occurring in July.

Still a few wild winter run steelhead returning to the hatchery. This year's return is near the all time record of 2,150 fish.

About 100 hatchery spring chinook were recycled to the lower river last week. Returns are slowing down but some fresh fish are being reported.

Lewis River - Some summer run steelhead are being caught.

Klickitat River - Some spring chinook are still being caught. Summer run steelhead catches are picking up.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Including fish released, bank anglers just downstream from Bonneville Dam averaged a summer chinook per every 6 rods last week. Some chinook were also being caught in the Longview area.

Steelhead catches were slow last week with bank anglers averaging a fish per every 19 rods based on mainly incomplete trips while boat anglers averaged one per every 10 rods based on completed trips. Most of the catch was found from Longview downstream.

Dam counts to date in June have been good for chinook and sockeye and steelhead. Through June 17, 31,746 adult chinook, 27,459 sockeye and 10,338 Skamania steelhead have passed Bonneville. The chinook count to date represents the third largest cumulative count through June 17 since at least 1981 and over twice the ten year average cumulative count. This suggests that the run is tracking well to come in the range of the runs in the last three years which were from 76,000 to 127,000 at Bonneville. The cumulative sockeye count represents the largest cumulative count through June 17 since at least 1975. The 2001 return which totaled 114,000 only had 22,500 past Bonneville by June 17.

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools - Bank anglers are catching some summer chinook in each pool. Best success was in The Dalles Pool where anglers averaged a fish per every 4.6 rods when counting fish released last week.

Sturgeon -

Last week charter boat anglers averaged 0.8 legals kept per rod while private boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 4.6 rods.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - No report currently available.

Ports of Chinook and Ilwaco - No report currently available. It may be available tomorrow.

Knappton-Chinook area - Bank anglers were catching a few legals.

Deep River Ramp - Private boat anglers averaged a legal kept per boat last week.

Wauna Powerlines to Beacon Rock - A few legals were being caught by boat anglers in the gorge.

Bonneville Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a legal per every 7 rods last week. Bank anglers were also catching a few legals. Friday June 25 is the last day for the year to retain sturgeon in Bonneville Pool and its tributaries.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers averaged a legal per every 4 rods when including fish released. Bank anglers were also catching some legals. Through May 31, an estimated 300 of the 400 fish guideline (75%) had been taken.

John Day Pool - Boat anglers were catching some legals. Slow for legal size fish from the bank. Through May 31, an estimated 101 of the 165 fish guideline (61%) had been taken.

Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools - Boat anglers in The Dalles averaged nearly ½ walleye per rod while in John Day Pool the average was a fish per rod when including fish released last week. Good numbers of bass were being caught from all three pools.

Trout -

Mayfield and Riffe lakes - Mayfield is producing rainbows while Riffe is producing mainly landlocked coho.

Shad -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Last week just below Bonneville Dam, bank anglers averaged nearly 7 shad per rod based on mainly incomplete trips. Boat anglers in the gorge, Camas/Washougal, and Kalama areas were also catching some fish.

Through June 20, nearly 4.5 million shad had been counted at Bonneville Dam. With recent daily counts ranging from nearly 100,000 to over 200,000 fish, last year's all-time record of 4,558,550 shad could be broken by today!
