Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River- Fishing for steelhead has picked up a little. Fish are scattered throughout the lower river from the barrier dam downstream.
Kalama River- Some steelhead are being caught.
Lewis River- Light effort and catch.
Lower Wind River and Drano Lake- Open to fishing for salmon and hatchery steelhead beginning March 16.
Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream- Scattered catches of spring chinook by boat anglers throughout the lower river. Boat anglers averaged a chinook (kept or released) per every 27.7 rods based on complete trips last week. 81.8% of the chinook were hatchery fish. 66.7% of the chinook kept were of lower river origin. 1 possible CWT from a lower river fish was recovered. No catch was observed from bank anglers.
This year's catch rate is less than half of 2003 on nearly the same week. From March 3-9 2003, boat anglers averaged a chinook (kept or released) per every 13.1 rods.
A total of 239 salmonid boats were counted during Saturday March 6 flight. About 1/3 of the boats were counted in the Woodland area.
239 anglers were counted on the Oregon bank and 62 along the Washington shore.Through March 3, a total of 28 adult spring chinook had been counted at Bonneville Dam. This is about 20% of the recent 10-year average of 138 fish.
Mainstem Columbia from the I-5 Bridge upstream to Bonneville Dam and Tower Island power lines located about 6 miles below The Dalles Dam upstream to McNary Dam- Open to fishing for hatchery spring chinook, hatchery steelhead, and shad March 16.
Bonneville Pool- No salmonid effort found there last week.
The Dalles Pool- Including fish released, boat anglers averaged nearly 2 steelhead per rod last week. No effort was observed from the bank.
John Day Pool- Bank anglers averaged better than a steelhead per rod last week when including fish released. No effort was observed for boats.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam- Some legals are being caught by bank anglers just downstream from Bonneville Dam. 172 sturgeon boats and 62 Oregon and 47 Washington bank anglers were counted during the Saturday March 6 flight.
Bonneville Pool- Some legals are being caught.
The Dalles Pool- Bank anglers are catching some legals.
John Day Pool- Boat anglers are catching some legals.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool- No effort observed for either specie.
The Dalles Pool- Boat anglers averaged better than ½ walleye per rod last week when including fish released. Light effort and no catch observed for bass.
John Day Pool- Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a walleye per rod last week. No effort was observed for bass.
Smelt -
Cowlitz River- They're back!!! Commercial fishers landed 1,300 pounds last night. Fish were up to at least Kelso.
Mainstem Columbia- High number of birds observed from the mouth of the Cowlitz downstream to at least Grays Bay beginning late last week.
