Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - Late winter run steelhead and some spring chinook are being caught throughout the lower river from the barrier dam downstream.
Kalama River - Some late winter run steelhead are being caught. The majority of the catch handled were wild fish.
Lewis River - Light effort and catches.
Wind River - Sone spring chinook are being caught by boat anglers. Effort was light. Bonneville Pool was so low last weekend that boaters may have had some difficulty getting around.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Success rates for boat anglers were lower last week than the previous week. Boat anglers averaged a fish kept/released per every 16.7 rods based on completed trips. Catch was scattered throughout the river. Bank angling improved with a chinook kept/released per every 29.1 rods based on mainly incomplete trips. Catch occurred from just below Bonneville Dam downstream to Woodland.
67% of the fish caught were hatchery fish. 59% of the fish kept were of upriver origin.
A total of 1,040 salmonid boats and 537 Oregon and 242 Washington bank anglers were counted from Bonneville Dam downstream during the Saturday March 20 flight. Highest boat count (217) was found in the Woodland area.
Through March 16, an estimated 35,000 angler trips has produced a catch of 1,100 chinook kept and 330 released.
Through March 19, a total of 253 adult spring chinook had been counted at Bonneville Dam. This compares to the recent 10-year average of 1,476 fish.
Bonneville Pool - Light effort and no catch observed there last week.
The Dalles Pool - One bank angler may have caught and released one of the 25 adult spring chinook that had been counted at The Dalles Dam through March 12.
John Day Pool - Bank anglers are catching some steelhead.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam caught some legals. Most of the effort has shifted to salmon with only slightly over a hundred sturgeon boats counted during the Saturday March 20 flight.
Bonneville Pool - Boat and bank anglers averaged a legal kept per every 12 to 14 rods last week.
The Dalles Pool - Boat and bank anglers averaged a legal kept per every 8 to 10 rods last week.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers were catching some legals.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - The few boat anglers sampled averaged 5 bass per rod last week. Light effort and no catch observed for walleye.
The Dalles Pool - The few boat and bank anglers sampled did well for walleye last week. Bank anglers averaged over 3 fish kept per rod while boat anglers averaged 1.5 fish per rod. Light effort catch for bass.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers averaged a walleye kept/released per every 3 rods and over 5 bass per rod last week.
Trout -
Klineline Pond - Bank anglers are catching browns and some rainbows. Planted with 1,000 half-pound browns last week.
Lakes planted with catchable size rainbows last week:
- Sacajawea Lake in Longview - 3,060 fish
- Icehouse Lake near Bridge of the Gods - 1,500 fish
- Little Ash Lake near Stevenson - 1,546 fish
Smelt -
No new reports of any smelt.
