Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - Producing some spring chinook and summer-run steelhead. Lots of fish reported jumping at the barrier dam. Returns to the salmon hatchery have been strong to date. Through April 28, a total of 1,241 adult and 24 jack hatchery spring chinook had returned. It's the second highest cumulative count through that period since at least 1986. On average 6% of the run have returned to the hatchery by this time.
Kalama River - Producing spring chinook and steelhead. Through April 28, a total of 14 hatchery adult spring chinook had returned to Kalama Falls Hatchery.
Lewis River - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged nearly 2/3 spring chinook per rod last week. Bank anglers were also catching some fish. Most of the effort and catch is centered around the salmon hatchery. Through April 27, a total of 28 adult and 1 jack hatchery spring chinook and 14 hatchery summer-run steelhead had been trapped at Merwin Dam.
Wind River - Boat anglers averaged a spring chinook per about every 3 rods last week. Effort was heavy Saturday May 1 with possibly 300 boats. Effort diminished Sunday with 90 boats counted there.
Some fish reported caught off the bank including some from the gorge and at the coffer dam. River is reported low and clear.
Drano Lake - Boat anglers averaged a spring chinook per every 4 rods last week. Bank anglers were also catching some fish. A couple thousand spring chinook were reported just downstream from the barrier dam at the hatchery.
White Salmon River - Bank anglers at the mouth are catching some spring chinook at times.
Klickitat River - Quite a few anglers reported Saturday morning. Some bright five-year old fish were caught. River was reported turbid today (Monday May 3).
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Closed to fishing for salmon, steelhead, and shad. Re-opens to fishing for hatchery steelhead and hatchery chinook jacks from I-5 Bridge to the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line beginning May 16 and from the I-5 Bridge upstream to the Hwy. 395 Bridge on June 16. Open to fishing for shad from Bonneville Dam downstream beginning May 16.
Adult hatchery summer chinook season is scheduled to open from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to Priest Rapids Dam beginning June 16.
Bonneville Pool - Low effort and catch for salmonids.The Dalles Pool - Including fish released, bank anglers averaged a chinook per every 2.7 rods while boat anglers averaged one per every 4.6 rods last week. 75% of the catch were hatchery fish.
John Day Pool - Bank and boat anglers averaged a chinook per every 10 rods last week. 79% of the catch were hatchery fish.
Note: No modifications were taken at last week's joint state hearing for sport fisheries from Bonneville Pool to John Day Pool. However, the salmon and steelhead fishery may close May 6 pending a run size update on May 4.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia from Beacon Rock deadline downstream - Boat anglers averaged a legal per boat in the gorge last week. Some legals were caught from Vancouver to Cathlamet.
Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged a legal per every 2 rods last week. Bank anglers were also catching some legals.
The Dalles Pool - Bank anglers caught some legals. Slow for legal sized fish from boats.
John Day Pool - Generally slow for legal sized fish.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - The few boat anglers sampled last week averaged 5 bass per rod last week. No effort was found for walleye.
The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers averaged 10 bass and a walleye per rod last week when including fish released. Bank anglers averaged 2 bass per rod.
John Day Pool - Boat anglers averaged over 6 bass and a walleye per rod last week. No effort for either species was observed for bank anglers.
Trout -
Klineline Pond - Producing catchable and triploid rainbows for bank angles.
Lakes planted with trout and surplus steelhead since April 22:
Mineral Lake - 3,614 catchable size rainbows;
Silver Lake near Castle Rock - 2,475 catchable size rainbows;
Kress Lake near Kalama - 45 surplus adult winter steelhead;
Icehouse Lake near Bridge of the Gods - 2,246 catchable size rainbows;
Little Ash Lake near Stevenson - 1,197 sea-run cutthroats averaging a half-pound each;
Horsethief Lake near Lyle - 6,302 catchable size rainbows and 75 brood stock rainbows averaging 7.6 pounds each.
