Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River- Last week, boat anglers averaged an adult chinook per every 4 rods while bank anglers averaged one per about every 7 rods when counting fish released. 77% of the fish caught were hatchery fish. Some late winter and summer run steelhead are also being caught. Catch is scattered from the barrier dam downstream.

Kalama River - When including fish released, boat anglers averaged an adult chinook per every 3 rods while bank anglers averaged one per every 4.6 rods last week. 74% of the fish caught were hatchery fish. Some steelhead are also being caught.

Lewis River - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged about ½ adult chinook per rod while bank anglers averaged one per about every 5 rods last week. 77% of the fish caught were hatchery fish. Most of the catch is centered around the salmon hatchery.

Wind River - Boat anglers at the mouth and bank anglers in the gorge and around the coffer dam averaged an adult chinook per about every 3 rods while bank anglers at the mouth averaged one per every 4 rods last week. River is reported very low and clear.

Through May 10, a total of 183 spring chinook had returned to Carson National Fish Hatchery. For the latest escapement totals, check the http://gorgefish.fws.gov/carson/.

Drano Lake - Boat anglers averaged a spring chinook per every 4.6 rods last week. Fishing from the bank was slow.

White Salmon River - Occasional fish being caught from the bank at the mouth.

Klickitat River - Slow when the water was turbid last week. Catches improved as the water cleared by Saturday.

Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream to the Tongue Point/Rocky Point line - Opens to fishing for hatchery steelhead and hatchery chinook jacks beginning May 16.


Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers from Camas/Washougal upstream to Beacon Rock averaged 3/4 legal per boat last week when including fish released.

The river from the mouth to the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line opens to retention 7 days/week beginning May 15. The min. size in this area will be 45".

Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged a legal per every 5.5 rods last week. A few legals are being caught from the bank. Through April 30, an estimated 356 of the 700 fish guideline (51%) had been taken.

The Dalles and John Day pools - No legals were observed in the catch last week. Through April 30, an estimated 65% and 56% of the guidelines had been taken in each pool, respectively.


Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged 9 bass kept/released last week. Bank anglers were also catching some fish. No effort was found for walleye.

The Dalles Pool - Boat anglers averaged over 4 bass and ½ walleye per rod when including fish released last week.

John Day Pool - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged over 8 bass and 2 walleye per rod last week. Little effort and catch observed from the bank.


Trout -

Lakes planted since April 30:

Fort Borst Pond in Chehalis - 3,000 catchable size rainbows (now juvenile only waters);

Sacajawea Lake in Longview - 3,000 catchable size rainbows plus any of the remaining 4,000 half pound rainbows from the fishing derby;

Kress Lake near Kalama - 93 surplus hatchery winter steelhead;

Battleground Lake - 2,110 catchable size rainbows


Shad -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Opens to fishing for shad beginning May 16. Through May 9, less than 200 fish had been counted at Bonneville Dam.
