Salmon/Steelhead -
Cowlitz River - Some spring chinook and steelhead are being caught from the I-5 Bridge downstream. Spring chinook returns continue to lag behind last year. Through May 25, a total of 1,635 adults had returned to the salmon hatchery. Last year 3,500 fish had returned through the same period.
Kalama River - Spring chinook are being caught from the Beginner's Hole to the deadline below the upper salmon hatchery. Spring chinook returns to the hatchery (1,072 fish through May 25) is slightly ahead of last year's return through the same time.
Lewis River - Spring chinook are still being caught from the mouth to the salmon hatchery. Spring chinook returns to the trap at Merwin Dam are also ahead of last year at this point (1,158 fish through May 25 vs 1,200 last year).
Wind River - Effort and catch is nearly nil at the mouth with just a few boats reported each day. Spring chinook appear to be in transit between the mouth and the hatchery with some fish being caught from the coffer dam to Milepost #7.
Through May 30, a total of 617 spring chinook had returned to Carson National Fish Hatchery. For daily returns, click here.
Drano Lake - Fishing for spring chinook was good early in the week but slowed over the weekend. Effort is declining with just over a couple dozen boats counted on Sunday (May 28) morning.
Klickitat River - Water conditions improved and so did the catch.
Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Spring chinook catches have dropped off but summer run steelhead improved from Longview downstream. Bank anglers in that area averaged a steelhead kept for every 3 rods based on mainly incomplete trips.
Effort was scattered throughout the river during the Sunday May 28 flight with a total of 138 boats and 175 Oregon and 104 Washington bank anglers counted from Bonneville downstream to Cathlamet.
Bonneville Pool - Bank anglers are catching some spring chinook.
The Dalles Pool - Spring chinook catches have dropped off.
John Day Pool - No catch was observed.
Sturgeon -
Lower Columbia from the mouth to the Wauna powerlines - Catch and effort is increasing. Charter boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 2.4 rods while private boaters at Chinook and Ilwaco averaged one per every 6.3 rods. Private boaters at Deep River averaged a legal kept per every 3.4 rods.
On the Sunday May 28 flight, approximately 300 private and 17 charter boats were counted from the Wauna power lines downstream. Over one third of the private boats were found in the Tongue Point/Lois Island area.
Lower Columbia from the Wauna powerlines to Marker #85 - Some legals are being caught throughout the area.
Bonneville Pool - Bank and boat anglers are catching some legals.
John Day Pool - No legals were found in the sample last week.
Walleye and Bass -
Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers averaged 12 bass released per rod while bank anglers averaged nearly 4 fish per
