Salmon/Steelhead -

Cowlitz River - Boat anglers between Mission Bar and Blue Creek averaged a summer-run steelhead per every 3 rods last week. A few spring chinook are still being caught from the I-5 Bridge downstream. River was turbid from the mouth of the Toutle downstream.

During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 848 spring Chinook adults, 68 spring Chinook jacks, 17 winter-run steelhead and 100 summer-run steelhead during four days of separator operations at Tacoma Power's Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Tacoma Power employees transported 718 spring Chinook adults, 73 spring Chinook jacks and 16 steelhead to the upper Cowlitz River at the Day Use Park in Lake Scanewa during the week. In addition, 79 spring Chinook adults and three jacks were transported to Packwood, Washington and released into the Cowlitz River upstream of the Skate Creek Bridge on Friday, May 28.

During the past week, Tacoma employees transported a total of 99 summer-run steelhead downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 3,510 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, June 1. Flows will increase to 4,200 cubic feet per second for a 12-hour period on Wednesday, June 2. Water visibility is eight feet.

Lake Scanewa (Cowlitz Falls Reservoir) - Catch and effort dropped off with the rain and resulting higher river flows. Very muddy water started on Friday May 28 and lasted through the weekend.

Green River (Toulte River tributary) - Open area to fishing for hatchery salmon and hatchery steelhead increases from mouth to 2800 Road Bridge beginning today (June 1) under permanent regulations.

Kalama River - Mixture of spring chinook and steelhead are being caught.

Lewis River- Some spring chinook are still being caught around the salmon hatchery although effort is down. Some summer-run steelhead are being caught from the hatchery downstream.

Wind River - Effort and catches are low at the mouth. Some spring chinook are still being caught in the gorge although effort is light. Sporadic mini surges provided some good catches from the gorge upstream to the coffer dam. Last week's rains raised the river level to the highest observed this season.

Drano Lake - Effort and catches continue to decline. The hatchery escapement goal of 1,500 fish has been met.

Klickitat River - Adult and jack spring chinook were being caught below Fisher Hill Bridge last week. Adult chinook may be retained from Fishway #5 (just upstream from the Fisher Hill Bridge) to the boundary below the salmon hatchery beginning today June 1. Rain and glacial melt added to the flows last week. The hatchery escapement goal of 500 fish has been met.

Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream to the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line - Effort and catches were generally light last week. Some summer run steelhead and adult chinook (which must be released until mid June) were being caught from Kalama downstream last week.

Final count of spring chinook at Bonneville Dam - 170,344 adults and 8,885 jacks. The jack count is 20% higher than the recent ten-year average of 7,405 fish.

Sturgeon -

Last week charter boat anglers averaged 0.6 legals kept per rod while private boat anglers averaged a legal per every 7 rods.

Lower Columbia from Beacon Rock downstream - Effort was pretty high last weekend with over 600 boats counted during the Saturday (May 29) flight. Over half the boats were found in the estuary.

At the Deep River ramp, boat anglers averaged a legal kept per every 5 rods last Saturday May 29. A few legals were also being caught from the bank. Some legals were also being caught by boat anglers in the gorge.

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools - Bank anglers were catching some legal sized fish. Slow for boat anglers.

Walleye and Bass -

Bonneville Pool - Bank and boat anglers are catching some bass. No effort was observed for walleye last week.

The Dalles and John Day pools - Including fish released, boat anglers averaged nearly 2 walleye per rod from The Dalles Pool and one per every 6 rods from John Day Pool last week. Bank and boat anglers were catching some bass from each pool.

Trout -

Little Klickitat River - Planted with 700 catchable size rainbows last week.

Goose Lake - Planted with 3,240 half pound brown trout last week.

Shad -

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers from Longview upstream averaged over 8 shad kept/released per rod last week. At Steamboat Landing in Washougal, dock anglers averaged 30 fish per rod during one check. 28 anglers were counted at the dock and 171 bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam last Saturday (May 29). No report on angling success for just below the dam.

Through Monday May 31, over 1.5 million shad had already been counted at The Dalles Dam.
