Salmon/Steelhead -

Washington Lower Columbia tributary adult spring chinook 2006 forecasts and actual returns plus 2007 forecasts - In general, 2007 adult returns to the Cowlitz and Kalama rivers are predicted to be down from 2006 but the Lewis return is expected to be up. The specific returns/forecasts are:

Grays River - No report on angling success. A total of 30 winter run steelhead had returned to the hatchery through November 22.

Cowlitz River - Bank anglers near the barrier dam continue to catch coho.

During the past week Tacoma Power and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recovered 4,583 adult coho salmon, 277 coho jacks, three fall chinook adults, one jack, 39 summer-run steelhead, 47 winter-run steelhead and 17 cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during six days of operations.

A total of 11 cutthroat trout and 77 steelhead were recycled to the Interstate-5 boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 13,500 cubic feet per second on Monday, November 27. Water visibility is less than 1 foot.
Tilton River - No report on angling success. 37 coho adults, one jack, two fall chinook adults and two cutthroat trout were released into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton during the week.

Riffe Lake - No report on angling success. Tacoma Power employees released 937 coho adults and 59 coho jacks into Riffe Lake at Mossyrock Park during the week. Riffe Lake elevation is 746 feet on Monday, November 27.

Lake Scanewa - No report on angling success is currently available. Tacoma Power employees released 1,979 coho adults, 114 jacks and one winter-run steelhead at the Day Use Park on Lake Scanewa. They transported 525 coho adults and 21 jacks to the Cispus River release site during the week, and they released 520 coho adults and 40 coho jacks at the Franklin Bridge site in Packwood. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel transported one cutthroat trout to the upper Cowlitz River basin.

Kalama River - Bank anglers are catching some coho although most are being released (dark fish). The hatchery adult coho daily limit has been increased to three fish through the end of the year. The first two hatchery winter run steelhead were reported at Kalama Falls Hatchery through November 22.

Kalama River Winter Steelhead Report #1 November 27, 2006

The first few hatchery winter-run have returned to the Kalama Falls Hatchery this past week- The "run" should be similar to last year's return. Also "decent" coho continue to return in strong numbers.

Kalama River- high water, but dropping with good color, still a bit too high for boaters.

Monday -10 hatchery winter steelhead were recycled to the lower river.
Many hundreds of coho were also handled. Also, 125 steelhead have been
planted into Kress Lake.

Lewis River - Bank anglers near the salmon hatchery are catching some dark coho, most of which are being released. The hatchery adult coho daily limit has been increased to three fish through the end of the year. Nineteen hatchery winter run steelhead were reported at the Lewis River Salmon Hatchery and 7 at Merwin Dam through November 22.

Washougal River - No report on angling success. The hatchery adult coho daily limit has been increased to three fish through the end of the year.

Klickitat River - Including fish released, bank anglers averaged 2 coho per rod. From the Fisher Hill Bridge (located about 3 miles upstream from the mouth) downstream the hatchery adult coho daily limit has been increased to three fish through the end of the year.

Bonneville Pool - No catch observed from the few boat anglers sampled.

Sturgeon -

Lower Columbia from the Wauna powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam - A lot slower for the bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam. 66 bank anglers sampled kept 3 legals and released 4 sublegals. Water temperature at the dam has decreased to 51 degrees.

Trout -

Klineline Pond - Bank anglers fishing in the swimming area are catching 12-18" browns on biscuit dough. The pond was also planted with nearly 1,000 catchable size rainbows on November 21.

Lacamas Lake near Camas - Planted with 5,000 catchable size rainbows on November 21.
