Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River - Still some coho being caught around the mouth of the Toutle.

Last week Tacoma Power recovered 983 coho salmon adults, 343 coho jacks, 689 fall chinook adults, 72 jacks, 31 summer-run steelhead, four spring chinook adults, two jacks and 11 cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during five days of operations.

Tacoma Power employees released 374 coho adults, 143 coho jacks and three spring chinook adults into Lake Scanewa at the Day Use Site and 80 fall chinook adults, 61 jacks, 33 coho adults and two jacks into Mayfield Lake at the Ike Kinswa State Park boat launch during the week. A total of 230 coho adults and 95 coho jacks were released into the upper Cowlitz River at the Skate Creek Bridge site in Packwood, Washington.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately at 3,620 cubic feet per second on Monday, October 1. Water visibility is over 14 feet.

Lewis River - Anglers are catching some coho around the salmon hatchery.

Drano Lake - No report on angling success. Scheduled to be closed to all fishing 6 pm Tuesdays to 6 pm Wednesdays during tribal fisheries in October.

Klickitat River - Bank anglers are catching some adult and jack fall chinook.

Yakima River - Effort picked up this past week. WDFW staff interviewed 118 anglers (22% of the effort). An estimated 39 adults and 36 jacks were harvested. Anglers are catching a high percentage of jacks. As of Sept 30, 49 adults and 51 jacks have been harvested. Anglers averaged 18.5 hours per fish caught.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville - A scattering of fall chinook and coho were caught from Woodland upstream.

Bonneville Pool - Boat anglers were doing well for adult and jack fall chinook and some coho and steelhead. Mouth of the Klickitat was very good for chinook. Bonneville Pool has been very low.

Hanford Reach - This week was a surprise with 265 adult chinook and 97 jacks caught compared to 204 adult and 21 jacks in 2006. Anglers averaged 1 fish for every 2 rods, or 1 fish for every 13.4 pole hours. Cooler weather and stable water flows may have contributed to the higher catch rates. On Saturday there was a Derby for the family of Jeff Johansson which increased the amount of fishing guides to the area and in turn contributed to the higher catch rate. Fish condition has been great with the cooler water temps in the low 60's.

Sturgeon

Lower Columbia from the Wauna power lines to Bonneville Dam - In the gorge, boat anglers averaged just under a legal per every other rod while bank anglers averaged one per every 8 rods based on mainly complete and incomplete trips respectively. Open to sturgeon retention daily through the end of the year.

Walleye

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - Boat anglers in the Camas/Washougal area are catching some walleye.

Trout

Goose Lake - Planted with nearly 1,600 one-pound cutthroats September 26.
