HARVEST PROFILE: Long Point is located on the southeast shore of Penn Cove on Whidbey Island with 4,427 feet of shoreline. Approximately half of this beach (all tidelands to the west of Long Point proper) is closed by the Department of Health due to the proximity to sewage outfalls. The shoreline east of the point is generally sand and gravel with some mud. The clam habitat is wide along the majority of the shoreline and narrows where the substrate changes to mud. Digging is best just southeast of Long Point and also on the point in the middle of the beach. Butter clams are the primary species harvested but cockles, horse clams and some native littleneck clams are also present.
DIRECTIONS TO SITE:
The beach is accessible by land from two roads. Both roads dead-end at the beach (see below).
Western Access: From the Clinton ferry terminal: Drive north on Hwy 525
(this changes into Hwy 20) for 23.5 miles. Bear right on Parker Rd., after 1 mile
take a right onto Portal Place Rd., bear left on Marine Drive, follow to the
end of the road and park on the shoulder.
From the north: Take Hwy 20 south through Coupeville, take a left at Parker
Rd., after 1 mile take a right onto Portal Place Rd., bear left on Marine
Drive, follow to the end of the road and park on the shoulder.
Eastern Access: From Parker Rd., after 0.6 miles take a right on Rhodena Rd.,
then a left onto Reeder Rd., follow to the end and park on the shoulder. Access
the beach down the small path to the left of the No Trespassing sign.
FACILITIES: The western access for Long Point provides parking for up to eight vehicles. The eastern access provides parking along the road. There are no restrooms provided.
