The 2009 Puget Sound Commercial Salmon Regulation pamphlet was mailed the week of July 12th. If you have not received a copy please contact (360) 902-2700 and ask for a copy or check our web site where one may be downloaded at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/commercial/salmon/

Fishers are reminded that a Fish Friendly certification card will be required to participate in any Area 7 or 7A commercial salmon fisheries. Contact (360) 902-2717 if you need to attend a workshop to get a card. For the most current information on Areas 7 or 7A sockeye fisheries check the National Marine Fisheries Hotline at (800) 662-9825.

For fishers who possess a Direct Retail Endorsement please remember per Washington Administrative Code (or WAC) 220-47-001 that all Puget Sound commercial salmon fisheries are designated as “Quick Reporting Required”, and you must comply with provisions of WAC 220-69-240 subsection 12.

Gillnet fishers are reminded that buoy requirements, as listed on page 15 of the pamphlet, are in effect for 300 fathom drift gill nets for all openings.

The season description published in the 2009 Puget Sound Commercial Salmon Regulation Pamphlet remains in effect.

For the period of August 23rd – August 29th all areas are currently closed except as follows:

Area 7B and 7C Bellingham Bay and Samish Bay will be open to gill nets using 7-inch minimum mesh size during the following dates and times:

7 PM Monday, August 24th to 8 AM Tuesday, August 25th.
7 PM Tuesday, August 25th to 8 AM Wednesday, August 26th.
7 PM Thursday, August 27th to 8 AM Friday, August 28th.

Area 7B and 7C Bellingham Bay and Samish Bay will be open to purse seines from 6 AM to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 26th.  Brailing is required and all sockeye, coho, chum, and pink salmon must be released immediately.

Area 8 Skagit Bay will be open to gill nets using 5-inch minimum and 5 ½-inch maximum mesh size from 6 AM to 10 PM on the following dates:

  • Monday, August 24th.
  • Wednesday, August 26th.
  • Fishers need to be aware that for Skagit Bay gill nets have 60 mesh maximum depth limitations.

Area 8 Skagit Bay will be open to purse seines from 6 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 25th and Thursday, August 27th.  Chinook, coho, sockeye and chum must be released.

Area 8A Port Susan and Port Gardner will be open to gill nets using 5-inch minimum and 5 ½-inch maximum mesh size from 6 AM to 10 PM on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, August 25th.
  • Thursday, August 27th.

Area 8A Port Susan and Port Gardner will be open to purse seines from 6 AM to 8 PM on Monday, August 24th and Wednesday, August 26th.  Chinook must be released.

Area 9A Port Gamble Bay will be open to gill nets and skiff gill nets limited to 600 feet in length and 60 meshes in depth using 5-inch minimum mesh size from 7 AM until 7 PM on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, August 25th.
  • Wednesday, August 26th.
  • Thursday, August 27th.
  • All Chinook and chum salmon must be released by cutting the meshes ensnaring the fish.

Areas 10 and 11 Seattle and Tacoma will be open to the gill net vessel DEMON SPAWN using 5-inch minimum and 5 ½-inch maximum mesh size from 6 AM to 10 PM during the following dates:

  • Monday, August 24th.
  • Tuesday, August 25th.
  • Soak times are limited to 45 minutes from first web in to last web out.  A recovery boxes is required and must be operating at all times to participate. All non-pink salmonids must be released and if injured or lethargic, placed in the recovery box for release after they have recovered. A department observer is required on board to participate.

Areas 10 and 11 Seattle and Tacoma will be open to purse seine vessels NEW OREGON and DC COLE from 6 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 25th and Thursday, August 27th. Brailing and recovery boxes are required and must be operating at all times to participate. All non-pink salmonids must be released and if injured or lethargic, placed in the recovery box for release after they have recovered. A department observer is required on board to participate.

Area 12A Quilcene Bay will be open to beach seines not to exceed 600 feet in length or 100 meshes in depth, or contain meshes of a size less than 3 inches or greater than 4 inches from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Monday, August 24th and Tuesday, August 25th.  All Chinook and chum salmon must be released.
