Critical Conservation Need      Submission Type: WDFW Staff
Rules Category:
Eastern Washington and Columbia Region Freshwater
Species covered in proposed rule
 • Steelhead
Rule to Change:
The Special Rules section for the lowermost area of the Tucannon River indicates that up to 3 hatchery steelhead can be retained. It then says selective gear rules are in effect upstream of Turner Rd Bridge at Marengo.
New Rule Proposal:
After the language that says up to 3 hatchery steelhead can be retained, it should include "barbless hooks required when fishing for steelhead."
Why the change is needed:
This regulation is needed to make it consistent with the intent and regulations throughout SE WA that barbless hooks are required when fishing for steelhead. This change would also align the regulations in the lower Tucannon River with those of the adjacent Snake River that requires barbless hooks when fishing for steelhead. Currently, anglers fishing near, or in, the confluence of the Snake and Tucannon rivers have inconsistent requirements regarding the use of barbless hooks.
Names of individuals or groups with whom you have discussed this change:
Ryan John, WDFW enforcement, Columbia County, Mike Gembala, Jeremy Trump of WDFW Fish program in SE WA.
Describe their support and/or concerns:
All support this regulation change to bring consistency of regulations between the Snake R and the lower Tucannon River.

This proposal does not require a new rule. We can make this rule, which is already in effect, clearer in the sport fishing pamphlet.
