Critical Conservation Need      Submission Type: Public
Region: Coast
Species covered in proposed rule
 • Steelhead
Rule to Change:
The keeping of one native steelhead in the Olympic Peninsula Rivers.
New Rule Proposal:
I'm proposing that the retention of native steelhead no longer be allowed.
Why the change is needed:
People spend thousands of dollars flying all over the world to CATCH AND RELEASE fish. The Olympic Peninsula Rivers as you know struggle to maintain sustainable numbers of native steelhead including the SolDuc which may be the best of them all for escapement. The idea that the locals need those fish to survive is ridiculous. These rivers are just as an exotic destination as any in the world and should be strictly managed as catch and release....period. By doing so it will help to restrain poachers, especially local resident poachers. If the fishery is catch and release there will be no grey area regarding retention.
Names of individuals or groups with whom you have discussed this change:
Fellow fishing partners from over 50 years of fishing.
Describe their support and/or concerns:
The same as mine.
