| Reference ID: DFW353060 | | Recreational Opportunities Submission Type: Public | Rules Category: Coastal Region Freshwater | Species covered in proposed rule • Shellfish
| Rule to Change: Opening of July 1st for Marine areas 4, 5, 6, 8-1, 8-2, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 for dungeness crabs. | New Rule Proposal: Open Marine areas 4, 5, 6, 8-1, 8-2, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 the 1st of June for persons with disabilities via the method of wading. | Why the change is needed: For persons such as myself, who are unable to pull up crab traps/pots, we are unable to obtain any crabs unless we know someone with a boat and that they agree to utilize out harvest card. If we are permitted to wade for the crabs in June, then those of us in with disabilities can get a fair shake. Once the opening of the crab season was changed permanently to July 1st, I stopped purchasing my Shellfish/Seaweed license. | Names of individuals or groups with whom you have discussed this change: No input given | Describe their support and/or concerns:

Reference ID: DFW353060 On October 1, 2010, the commission adopted revisions to the Puget Sound Crab Policy (policy C-3609) that specifically identifies a recreational season for all gear types including the wade fishery. The summer recreational crab season as defined in the policy opens the fishery on July 1 and allows wade crabbing Thursday through Monday of each week until Labor Day. In February of 2011 permanent regulations were adopted into law that implement the Commission’s July through Labor Day crab season. Some marine areas re-open for winter crabbing starting in October with a seven day per week fishery. Modifying the recreational crab season dates to include openings prior to July 1 would be a departure from the Commission’s policy and therefore not a viable option at this time.
