Rule to Change: Channel Creek (Whatcom Co.) All Game Fish First Sat. in June-Sept. 15 Statewide min. size/daily limit.
New Rule Proposal: Channel Creek (Whatcom Co.) All Game Fish First Sat. in June-August 30 Statewide min. size/daily limit.
Why the change is needed: Channel creek is a crystal clear, spring fed stream, flowing at less than 10 cfs in summer, that receives large numbers of spawning sockeye salmon. With recent increases in escapement of adult Sockeye salmon to Baker Lake, a few adults have been showing up earlier in Channel Creek to spawn than the current fishing closure. The current closure date in place is intended to prevent harassment of adult Sockeye. With the combination of a large number of fishers enjoying the Baker Lake Sockeye fishery, the small, crystal clear spawning small stream running parallel to the main road, and the visually obvious adult sockeye adults, the temptation to harass/fish for/snag spawning adults is a great. The earlier closure date is needed to prevent temptation.
