Puget Sound Region Freshwater
Type of Rule Change Proposal
County or Location Information
Require selective gear rules in Canyon Creek to reduce hooking mortality of wild summer steelhead.
ExplanationOriginal Rule Proposal Number(s)
Canyon Creek has a catch and release fishery except for hatchery steelhead. There are no longer hatchery releases of summer or winter steelhead into Canyon Creek. Selective gear rules would reduce hooking mortality of non-hatchery summer steelhead in Canyon Creek.

The rule makes sense if you assume the wild population is threatened. I cannot find any data at all showing the creek needs to be catch and release in the first place.
The spawning takes place in the upper section, and the upper section is nearly impossible to access. How does the WDFW know that the steelhead are endangered when no studies have been done?
I've heard on a number of occasions that this creek is heavily poached by those that live in the River & Forest housing area. Especially when the Coho are in.

i'm aagainst closing creeks. for the most part they don't get overfished and what a great experience. fish, scenery, solitude, etc. more opportunities for fishing streams.
