Rule Change Recommendation Short Title
• See comments Rules Category Coastal Region Freshwater Type of Rule Change Proposal Conservation County or Location Information Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, North Coast Short Description Allow retention of any hatchery (ad-clipped) trout under 14 inches in coastal streams (anadromous waters) where trout regulations stipulate a bag limit of minimum size 14 inches and daily limit 2. Explanation Allow anglers to further DFW's conservation efforts and hatchery management practices by removing hatchery origin steelhead juveniles that delay migration from freshwater areas or residualize after release. The benefits include reduced competition with rearing wild juvenile steelhead and other wild stocks, and potentially reduced genetic crossing with wild steelhead by reducing the presence of hatchery rainbow in spawning areas. J, K B December 10, 2012 BELLINGHAM, WA Comments: I would only support this measure if these waters were placed under selective gear status. We do not need anglers using bait and accidentally deep-hooking wild smolts.
BORBON, RAYMOND January 01, 2013 KIRKLAND, WA Comments: Keep the regulations as they are. I fish the coastal rivers exclusively and the 14 " minimum should be applied to all trout. If someone needs to eat 12 inch trout they probably should just switch to the more abundant lake perch all around. There's not a lot to eat on two small trout. Even 14" is borderline small for eating. Additionally I find it ok to find legal trout without a rule change. LAWRENCE, ANDREW R January 23, 2013 LYNNWOOD, WA Comments: I support this proposal for the reasons noted above. SIMMS, RICH January 29, 2013 MUKILTEO, WA Comments: Support proposal as written
