Triploids for Dad! West Medical Lake is getting over 1,200 extra triploid rainbow trout of about 1-1/2 pounds each just for Father's Day weekend, June 14-15, 2014. West Medical is one of only two lakes near Spokane that are receiving these extra big trout to encourage you to take Dad fishing!
Generally, this is one of the best producing opening day trout lakes in the state. This lake grows fish rapidly and it is not uncommon to see rainbow and brown trout to 24 inches. Even though this lake is open to all types of angling, it can be an especially productive lake for flyfishing because of the consistent insect hatches it has in April and May.
WDFW, in cooperation with area fishing clubs, installed a new aeration system in this lake. The new aeration system should help to alleviate fish kills that have happened periodically in the past. Recent stocking efforts by WDFW, and decent carryover rates should have the lake in decent shape for 2014 fishing season.
It should be noted that while access to West Medical Lake remains available through a WDFW-managed site on the south end of the lake, walk-in shoreline access on the north end, through private property, is no longer legal. The "unofficial" access on the north end was abused by litterers and is now posted with "No Trespassing" signs that should be respected.
