STREAM HABITAT RESTORATION

Development of the guideline for this subject was begun in October of 2001. SHRG includes information from the Channel Design and Ecological Issues in Floodplain and Riparian Corridors state-of-the-knowledge white papers, completed May 2001. It is a guide for planning, design, and ecological considerations for process based natural stream habitat restoration. It includes methods for restoring the natural supply of sediment, water, and woody debris to the stream; water quality; habitat connectivity; and habitat diversity. Issues to be addressed in the guideline include channel configuration, riparian function, hyperheic function, and floodplain connectivity. Channel design parameters are addressed, including specific habitats (spawning, rearing, holding, riparian, etc.), habitat forming structures, and off-channel habitats.
