Significant revisions to Priority Habitat and Species List

Over the past year, WDFW has been updating the agency’s Priority Habitat and Species (PHS) List. The PHS List is a catalog of those species and habitats that WDFW has identified as priorities for management and conservation. The PHS List directly affects what the agency maps in our PHS database, and new changes to the list will result in some changes to data that are released to cities and counties. Because information on fish, wildlife, and their habitats is dynamic, the list requires a periodic update. The last major update occurred in 1999.

The list that is now out for review has gone through extensive revision, and various experts have been involved in the development of the new draft. We are now interested in hearing from you!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REVIEWERS

Please submit review comments to azerrjma@dfw.wa.gov by June 11, 2008. Questions about the list or how to review the draft list can be directed to the same email address or by calling Jeff Azerrad at 360-906-6754.

When reviewing the draft, please make sure to consider the following:

  1. All edits, comments, and suggestions must be written on the Reviewer's Comment Excel Spreadsheet. Once you have completed your review, save and then attach the spreadsheet to an email and send it to azerrjma@dfw.wa.gov.

  2. It is recommended that you save the draft PHS List onto your computer. Then use your copy for reviewing.

  3. Please focus your review on species and habitats where changes have occurred (see Appendices 3 and 4)*. Appendices 5 and 6 provide more detail on changes to specific species and habitats.

  4. Comments and edits made on species or habitats that are not listed in Appendices 3 and 4 will be retained to considered during a future PHS List revision.

* When the PHS List update began, many individuals were emailed and sent a follow-up asking for suggested changes to the 1999 PHS List. Higher priority changes (e.g., those suggested by multiple individuals) were addressed during the update.
