How does the hunter education deferral program work?

The one-year, once-in-a-lifetime hunter-education deferral program allows an individual to hunt one year before having to successfully pass a formal hunter education course. An application can be found online and must be submitted to the Hunter Education Division in Olympia for approval. See WDFW's Hunter Education Deferral website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/huntered/he_deferral.html for more information.

Those people receiving a deferral can only hunt general seasons and may not apply for any special permits. You must be at least 10 years old to qualify for a deferral and must be accompanied by an experienced hunter who has held a Washington hunting license for the previous three years. A $20 application fee is required.
