You build up Special Permit points by purchasing applications each year. You earn one point for each Special Permit category application you purchase each year. For example, you can purchase a Quality Deer, Buck Deer, Antlerless Deer, and Second Deer Special Permit all in the same year, earning one point in each of those categories.
Your Special Permit points will drop to zero when drawn for a special permit, but only for the category you were drawn. Your other points remain and carry over for future seasons. Points never expire and you don’t lose your points for not purchasing or applying.
Although you can build up points in multiple categories as described in the situation above, please be aware that if you submit hunt choice locations for multiple applications, you could be drawn for multiple Special Permits in the same year. In that event, your points in each of those categories would go to zero. You could hunt each of those drawn opportunities along with the eligible general season, but your bag limit would not increase by drawing multiple Special Permits unless drawn for a category such as Second Deer.
One way to avoid this situation is using the Points Option hunt choice where you can build points without risking getting drawn for a hunt. For example, let’s say that you are only interested in drawing a Quality Elk Special Permit this year, but want to improve your chances drawing Bull Elk and Antlerless Elk Special Permits for future drawings. In this case, submit both the Bull Elk and Antlerless Elk Special Permits with Points Option to build points in those categories, but submit a hunt choice location for your Quality Elk Special Permit to give yourself a chance at drawing that hunt.
