Have the state’s efforts to remove California sea lions been effective?

It’s clear from the numbers that the states’ efforts have generally helped to control the number of California sea lions feeding below Bonneville Dam, the number of fish consumed, and the percentage of the run lost each year. Since 2008, the number California sea lions spotted below the dam has never reached the level counted in 2003 (104), and the percentage of the run lost to predation declined to less than half the amount taken in 2007. Despite these efforts, the fact remains that sea lions continue to consume thousands of listed salmon and steelhead below the dam and other areas of the lower Columbia every year, so the situation still presents an ongoing challenge.
