When and how can I train my upland bird hunting dogs

A person can purchase pen raised upland birds and release them on private property for the purpose of shooting (bird dog training). However, only those banded or clipped birds that were purchased can be killed. If a person was to accidently kill a wild bird it would be considered a closed season violation. On some WDFW Wildlife Areas, year round bird dog training is allowed, but the remainder of the state is under an August 1-March 31 bird dog training season. A small game license is required to train on wild birds (unless the person trains his bird dog(s) in Western Washington then they need a Western Washington pheasant license) but wild birds cannot be shot out of season.Licences may be purchased online or at authorized license vendors.
