Bird dog training season runs from August 1-March 31, but dog training may be conducted year round on designated portions of some WDFW Wildlife Areas. Refer to the bird dog training season section of the Migratory Waterfowl & Upland Game pamphlet for these locations.
A small game license is required for training dogs on all wild birds; except only a western Washington pheasant license is required for western Washington pheasants.
A person can purchase pen raised upland birds and release them on private property for the purpose of shooting (bird dog training). However, only those banded or clipped birds that were purchased can be killed. Wild birds cannot be shot out of season, so if a person was to accidently kill a wild bird it would be considered a closed season violation. Training dogs on western Washington pheasant release sites is only open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Only youth and seniors may train dogs during their respective seasons on designated western Washington pheasant release sites. Licenses may be purchased online or at authorized License Vendors.
