2012 Hunting Forecasts by District
District biologists have provided hunting forecasts for their district based on surveys and field work.

2011 Big Game Hunting Results by District     Big Game

District 1

Big Game

Deer
Last year, hunters in District 1 harvested 3,728 deer, the vast majority of them (3,073) antlered bucks. Modern firearms hunters accounted for just over 3,000 of the deer taken district-wide, about 83 percent of them bucks. Game Management Unit 121 (Huckleberry) produced the largest deer harvest (697) for modern firearms hunters during the season, but GMUs 105 (Kelly Hill), 108 (Douglas), 111 (Aladdin) and 113 (Selkirk) had higher success rates, ranging from 25.8 to 29.7 percent.

District 1 archers harvested 501 deer, muzzleloader hunters 150 and multiple-weapons hunters 69. Multiple-weapons hunters had the district’s highest hunter success rate for the season, 23.8 percent, with archers close behind at 23.4 percent. Modern firearms and muzzleloader hunters throughout District 1 had success rates of just under 21 percent.

Elk
District 1 hunters harvested 234 elk during the 2011 season, nearly two-thirds of them antlered bulls. Modern firearms hunters took 122 of those elk, bow hunters 72, muzzleloader hunters 30 and multiple weapons hunters 10. Multiple weapons hunters, though, had the highest success rate for the season, 19.2 percent. Success among modern firearms hunters was lowest of the four weapon types, 4.4 percent. GMU 117 (49 Degrees North) was the most productive elk unit in the district. Hunters there harvested 54 bulls and 16 antlerless elk, for a total of 70.

Bear
Washington’s Bear Management Unit (BMU) 7 is comprised of 12 game management units in northeastern Washington, including all seven GMUs in District 1, and it produced the largest bear harvest of the state’s nine BMUs during the 2011 bear season. Some 4,096 hunters harvested 324 black bear in BMU 7 last season, and 255 of those animals were taken from the seven units comprising District 1.

Cougar
This wooded and mountainous corner of the state has a healthy cougar population, and District 1 hunters harvested 14 of the big cats during the general hunting season in 2011.

District 2

Big Game

Deer
The seven game management units comprising District 2 produced 4,085 bucks and 1,261 antlerless deer during the 2011 general hunting season, for a total harvest of 5,346, making it the top deer-producing district in Washington. Over 3,900 of those deer were harvested by modern firearms hunters, who had an impressive 30.8 percent success rate district-wide. Even more impressive, though, were the success rates among bow hunters and muzzleloader hunters (both 33.8 percent) and multiple weapons hunters (34 percent).

Game Management Unit 124 (Mount Spokane) produced more deer during the 2011 general season than any other unit in the district, or any other unit in the state, for that matter. The total harvest in GMU 124 was 2,134 deer. Hunter success rates in the unit ranged from 22.8 percent for muzzleloader hunters to 33.5 percent for archers.

A large number of special deer permits were also issued for the game management units in District 2, and permit-holders harvested 605 antlerless deer and 184 bucks for total 789.

Elk
District 2 hunters harvested 322 elk during the 2011 general season, just over half of them bulls. Modern firearms hunters accounted for about two-thirds of the total elk harvest, and posted an impressive 13.3 percent success rate. The district’s 21 multiple-weapons hunters did even better, taking five elk, four of them antlerless, for a 23.8 percent success rate. GMU 130 (Cheney) was the district’s top elk producer during the general hunts, with 125 animals harvested, half of them bulls and half antlerless. Modern firearms and muzzleloader hunters accounted for nearly 90 percent of the elk harvest in the Cheney Unit.

Bear
Hunters harvested 30 black bear from three of the seven game management units in District 2 during the 2011 season. Twenty-five of the 30 came from GMU 124 (Mount Spokane), four from GMU 127 (Mica Peak) and one from GMU 133 (Roosevelt).

Cougar
General season cougar hunters in the seven game management units comprising District 2 harvested 11 of the big cats in 2011. Hunters in the Mount Spokane and Roosevelt units accounted for eight of those 11.

District 3

Big Game

Deer
Deer hunters on hand for the 2011 general hunts in southeastern Washington took 2,203 deer, about 85 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters harvested more than 1,800 of the deer from this district, with bow hunters taking 205, muzzleloader hunters taking 159 and multiple-weapons hunters harvesting 35. Muzzleloader hunters had the highest success rate (35.4 percent), archers the lowest (17.9 percent).

The top deer-producing units in District 3 last season were GMU 149 (Prescott) with 593 deer harvested, GMU 162 (Dayton) with 328, GMU 145 (Mayview) with 268 and GMU 154 (Blue Creek) with 261. In terms of hunter success, modern firearms hunters in the Mayview Unit had a 41.4 percent success rate during the 2011 general season, followed by a 35.8 percent success rate in the Peola Unit and a 33.1 percent rate in the Prescott Unit.

Elk
District 3 elk hunters harvested 206 elk during the 2011 general-season hunts. Eighty-two percent of those elk were bulls, and modern firearms hunters accounted for nearly 75 percent of the district’s elk harvest. GMU 162 (Dayton) and GMU 178 (Lick Creek) were the district’s top elk producers, with 52 and 37 elk, respectively. Twenty-three general bow season hunters in GMU 181 (Couse) harvested eight antlerless elk for an impressive 34.8 percent success rate.

This district also had a notable elk harvest by hunters with special permits. The permit harvest included 98 antlerless elk and 109 bulls.

Bear
The 2011 fall bear season in District 3 produced 68 black bear for just fewer than 4,100 hunters, a 5.6 percent hunter success rate. GMUs 154 (Blue Creek), 162 (Dayton) and 166 (Tucannon) accounted for 51 of the 68 bear harvested in the district.

Cougar
Hunters harvested nine cougar in District 3 during the 2011 general cat season, including three each from the Dayton and Mountain View units.

District 4

Big Game

Deer
Deer hunters in District 4 harvested 656 deer during the 2011 general season, 509 of them coming from GMU 381 (Kahlotus) in the northeastern part of the district. The Kahlotus Unit is the only one of four units in the district that had a significant harvest of antlerless deer, accounting for 31 percent of the total. The district-wide hunter success rate for modern firearms hunters was over 33 percent, with the Kahlotus Unit leading the way at 36.7 percent.

Elk
Modern firearms hunters accounted for the entire harvest of 33 elk during the 2011 general and permit seasons in District 4. Twenty-five came from GMU 372 (Rattlesnake Hills) and 8 came from GMU 381 (Kahlotus).

Bear
Hunters occasionally harvest a black bear or two in District 4, but a handful of hunters bagged none during the 2011 season.

Cougar
Only one cougar was harvested in District 4 during the 2011 general season.

District 5

Big Game

Deer
The 2011 general deer season produced 594 deer for District 5 hunters, about 89 percent of them bucks. All of the 428 deer harvested by modern firearms hunters were bucks, while the antlerless deer comprised 58 percent of the deer harvest for bow hunters. Hunter success rates in the district range from 21.1 percent for bow hunters to 33.8 percent for multiple weapons hunters. GMUs 272 (Beezley) and 284 (Ritzville) were the most productive deer units in the district, giving up 300 and 245 deer, respectively. Modern firearms deer hunters in the Ritzville Unit enjoyed a 33.4 percent success rate during the 2011 general season.

Elk
Game Management Unit 284 (Ritzville) produced 27 of the 32 elk harvested in District 5 during last fall’s general season. All elk taken in the district were harvested by modern firearms hunters, and they tallied a 23 percent success rate for the season.

Bear
There were no black bear harvested in district 5 during the 2011 season.

Cougar
Hunters took seven cougar in District 5 last season, all of them from GMU 272 (Beezley).

District 6

Big Game

Deer
General season hunters harvested 2,031 deer from the 10 game management units comprising District 6, nearly 90 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters accounted for about 69 percent of the harvest; all general modern-firearms hunts were buck-only. The deer harvest among bow hunters was 502, about 60 percent of that total being bucks. Archers enjoyed 27.4 percent success rate district-wide, multiple-weapons hunters 23.9 percent, muzzleloader hunters, 21.7 percent and modern firearms hunters, 13.9 percent.

The highest deer harvest numbers in the district last season were reported in GMU 204 (Okanogan East), GMU 215 (Sinlahekin), GMU 218 (Chewuch) and GMU 224 (Pearrygin). These four units produced 1,308 (64 percent) of the deer harvested from District 6.

Special permit holders harvested 363 deer in District 6, 243 antlerless and 120 bucks.

Elk
Elk are few and far between in Okanogan County, and hunters harvested only eight of them in District 6 during the 2011 general season. Six of the eight came from GMU 204 (Okanogan East). All but one were harvested by modern firearms hunters.

Bear
District 6 hunters harvested 77 black bear last season, with 14 of them coming from GMU 242 (Alta), 12 from GMU 215 (Sinlahekin) and 11 each from GMU 218 (Chewuch) and GMU 233 (Pogue).

Cougar
Hunters harvested four cougar in District 6 during the 2011 general season, two of them from GMU 215 (Sinlahekin).

District 7

Big Game

Deer
Hunters harvested 1,282 deer during the 2011 general seasons in the 14 game management units that comprise District 7, 95 percent of them bucks. Of the 66 antlerless deer taken here, 63 were harvested by archers, three by multiple-weapons hunters. Modern firearms hunters accounted for about 75 percent of the district’s general-season harvest, but had the lowest success rate, 14.5 percent. Muzzleloader hunters did nearly twice as well, garnering a 27.2 percent success rate.

Game Management Unit 250 (Swakane) produced the most deer in the district, 176, followed by GMU 248 (Big Bend) with 156 and GMU 247 (Entiat) with 154. Hunter success for general season modern firearms hunters was 26.2 percent in the Big Bend Unit and 25.2 percent in GMU 262 (Withrow).

There were also a number of special permit hunts in District 7 last year, and permit hunters harvested 272 deer, about 58 percent of them antlerless.

Elk
General-season hunters harvested 83 elk in District 7 last year, about 65 percent of them bulls. Elk were harvested in only five of the district’s 14 game management units, and most of them came from GMU 251 (Mission). Of the 65 elk taken from the Mission Unit, 38 were bulls.

Bear
Hunters harvested 78 black bear from the units within the boundaries of district 7 during 2011. GMU 245 (Chiwawa) produced 19 of those animals, and GMU 251 (Mission) produced 27.

Cougar
Hunters harvested nine cougar from the units within District 7 during the 2011 general season, four of them from GMU 250 (Swakane) and three from GMU 266 (Badger).

District 8

Big Game

Deer
Deer hunters in south-central Washington harvested 797 deer, all of them bucks, during the general season of 2011. Despite a harvest success rate of only 7 percent, modern firearms hunters accounted for 576 (72 percent) of the deer taken in District 8. The district’s 323 multiple-weapons hunters had a 13.3 percent success rate, best of all weapons types.

Of the district’s 14 game management unites, GMU 335 (Teanaway) was the most productive for deer hunters, giving up 209 bucks, more than 26 percent of the district total. Modern firearms hunters in the Teanaway Unit enjoyed an 11.1 percent success rate, just behind the 11.4 percent rate for rifle hunters in GMU 342 (Umtanum).

Elk
The 14 game management units within District 8 produced a harvest of 1,062 elk for hunters during the 2011 general season. Bulls comprised 57 percent of that harvest. Modern firearms hunters accounted for half the harvest, archers 33 percent and muzzleloader hunters 15 percent. The top three units in terms of harvest totals (each with over 125 animals) were GMU 368 (Cowiche), GMU 346 (Little Naches) and GMU 328 (Naneum).

This is another district where special permit holders contributed significantly to the elk harvest. In fact, permit hunters harvested 644 elk, nearly half as many as were taken during the general season.

Bear
The total bear harvest in District 8 game management units in 2011 was 86. Twenty-seven of those animals were taken from GMU 326 (Naneum) and 24 came from GMU 335 (Teanaway).

Cougar
The District 8 general-season cougar harvest during the 2011 general season was 6, one each from six different game management units.

District 9

Big Game

Deer
Eighty-seven percent of the deer harvested by hunters in District 9 during the 2011 general hunting season were bucks, and three-quarters of those deer were taken by modern firearms hunters. The district-wide harvest total was 1,964 deer. Hunter success among modern firearms users was also good, at 15.3 percent. Archers had a 14.6 percent success rate, while muzzleloader and multiple-weapons hunters both were over 21 percent.

Modern firearms hunters in GMU 382 (East Klickitat) enjoyed a spectacular 28-percent success rate and gave up 467 deer, more than any other unit in the district. Muzzleloader hunters in the East Klickitat unit were even more successful, with a 31.9 percent success rate. GMU 388 Grayback) produced 326 deer, GMU 568 (Washougal) 381, more than 91 percent of them taken by modern firearms hunters.

Elk
District 9 hunters harvested 522 elk during the 2011 general season, about 81 percent of them bulls. Modern firearms hunters accounted for just under half of the total harvest, but had a success rate of just 4.8 percent for the season. Archers harvested 150 elk, muzzleloader hunters 98 and multiple-weapons hunters 16. Hunters is GMU 560 (Lewis River) harvested 241 (46 percent) of the elk taken in District 9.

Bear
Hunters harvested 144 black bear is District 9 during 2011. The top bear-producing units in the district were GMU 560 (Lewis River), GMU 568 (Washougal), GMU 654 (Mashel) and GMU 578 (West Klickitat). Hunters harvested at least 24 black bear from each of these units.

Cougar
Hunters took 14 cougar from hunting areas of District 9 during the 2011 general season. The top units for cougar harvest were GMU 560 (Lewis River) with five and GMU 578 (West Klickitat) with four.

District 10

Big Game

Deer
District 10, near the southwest corner of the state, produced 2,156 deer for hunters during the 2011 general season, more than 90 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters harvested 1,748 (89 percent) of those deer and scored a 14.8 success rate.

Hunters in GMU 520 (Winston) harvested 342 of those deer, about 88 percent of them bucks. GMU 501 (Lincoln) gave up 313 deer in 2011, GMU 530 (Ryderwood), 296 deer. Highest hunter success rate among the district’s modern firearms hunters, 20.9 percent, was in GMU 505 (Mossyrock).

Elk
Hunters in this elk-rich part of the state harvested 966 bulls and 294 antlerless elk to top the total-harvest list during the 2011 general elk season. Roughly half of the elk taken from District 10 were harvested by modern firearms hunters, 31 percent by bow hunters and 17 percent by muzzleloader hunters. Hunters took at least 200 elk from each of four game management units, GMU 596 (Willapa Hills), GMU 520 (Winston), GMU 530 (Ryderwood) and 550 (Coweeman).

Special permit hunters harvested nearly as many elk from District 10 as were taken during the general season. The permit harvest was 972 antlerless elk and 188 bulls, 1,160 in all.

Bear
Hunters harvested 104 black bear in District 10 during the 2011 hunts, 30 of them from GMU (Ryderwood). Other units with double-digit harvest numbers were GMU 501 (Lincoln), 506 (Willapa Hills), 516 (Packwood) and 550 (Coweeman).

Cougar
Hunters harvested six cougar in District 10 during the2011 general season, three of them from GMU 530 (Ryderwood).

District 11

Big Game

Deer
Antlered bucks comprised 88 percent of the 1,620 deer harvested by hunters during the 2011 general season in District 11. Modern firearms hunters accounted for 1,247 (77 percent) of that harvest and enjoyed a 16-percent success rate. Bow hunters were successful at a 14.7-percent rate, multiple weapons hunters at 16.4 percent.

Game Management Unit 667 (Skookumchuck) 541 bucks and 65 antlerless deer, 37 percent of the district total. GMU 654 (Mashel), GMU 663 (Capitol Peak) and GMU 666 (Deschutes) all produced more than 200 deer for general-season hunters. Modern firearms hunters in the Mashel, Capitol Peak and Skookumchuck units had success rates of over 16 percent.

Elk
District 11 hunters harvested 284 elk during 2011’s general season, with modern firearms hunters, muzzleloader enthusiasts and archers all contributing significantly to that total. GMU 652 (Puyallup) and GMU 667 (Skookumchuck) produced 92 and 96 elk, respectively, to that district-wide total. One in five modern firearms hunters in the Puyallup Unit harvested an elk.

Bear
Hunters harvest 80 black bear from the game management units in District 11 (including the Skookumchuck unit, “shared” by Districts 10 and 11). GMU 654 (Mashel) produced 33 of those bear. Other productive black bear units were GMU 653 (White River), GMU 652 (Puyallup) and GMU 667 (Skookumchuck).

Cougar
Hunters took six cougar in district 11 during last year’s general season, five of them from GMU 667 (Skookumchuck).

District 12

Big Game

Deer
The four game management units that make up District 12 produced 443 deer for general-season hunters in 2011, all but 13 of them taken from GMU 454 (Issaquah) and GMU 460 (Snoqualmie). Hunters in those two units harvested 277 and 163 deer, respectively. Modern firearms hunters accounted for more than half of the district-wide total harvest, and enjoyed a 19.5-percent success rate. Issaquah Unit rifle hunters did even better, registering a success rate of 25.5 percent. Better than one in three multiple-weapons deer hunters in the Issaquah Unit was successful in 2011.

Elk
Hunters harvested 103 elk, about 75 percent of them bulls, in District 12 during last year’s general elk season. Muzzleloader hunters accounted for just over half of that total, with archers and modern firearms hunters accounting for about 25 percent each. Muzzleloader hunters also had the district’s best hunter-success rate, 13.7 percent. Hunters in GMU 454 (Issaquah) harvested 71 elk, about 69 percent of the district total.   

Bear
Hunters harvested 69 black bear in District 12 during 2011. GMU 454 (Issaquah) and GMU 460 (Snoqualmie) produced all but five of them.

Cougar
Hunters didn’t harvest any cougar in District 12 during the 2011 general season.

District 13

Big Game

Deer
District 13 includes only two game management units, and they produced 128 deer for general-season hunters in 2001. Hunters in GMU 448 (Stillaguamish) harvested 115 of those deer, and 91 percent of those were bucks. Archers in the Stillaguamish Unit had a 17.8 percent success rate, while modern firearms hunters were successful at an 11.7-percent rate.

Elk
The lone elk harvested in District 13 during last year’s general season was a bull taken from GMU 448 (Stillaguamish) by a modern firearms hunter.

Bear
Hunters in GMU 448 (Stillaguamish) harvested 59 black bear and hunters in GMU 450 (Cascade) harvested 6 for a total of 65 bear taken in District 13 last year.

Cougar
Hunters didn’t harvest any cougar in District 13 during the 2011 general season.

District 14

Big Game

Deer
Hunters in the five units that make up District 14 harvested 1,570 deer during the general season last year, about 78 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters accounted for 72 percent of the deer harvested, and they enjoyed a district-wide success rate of 26.6 percent. Bow hunters, multiple-weapons hunters and muzzleloader hunters also had success rates of over 20 percent.

Over 48 percent (759) of the deer harvested in District 14 came from GMU 410 (Islands), and modern firearms hunters in that unit had an amazing 46.8-percent success rate. Success rates for bow hunters (28.5 percent), multiple-weapons hunters (41.4 percent) and muzzleloader hunters (28.7 percent) were also good in the Island Unit. GMU 407 (North Sound) produced 558 deer last season.

Elk
The only elk taken during District 14’s general season last year was a bull taken by a bow hunter in GMU 407 (North Sound).

Bear
The black bear harvest for western Washington’s northernmost district was an impressive 128 animals in 2011. GMU 418 (Nooksack) led the way with 59 bear, but GMU 437 (Sauk) was close behind with 52.

Cougar
District 14 hunters harvested two cougar during the 2011 general season, both of them from GMU 407 (North Sound).

District 15

Big Game

Deer
District 15 hunters harvested 1,394 deer during last year’s general season, 90 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters accounted for 78 percent of the harvest and had a 17.8-percent success rate.

Three units in the district, GMU 621 (Olympic), GMU 633 (Mason) and GMU 651 (Satsop), produced over 200 deer each. Hunters in the Olympic Unit harvested 356 deer, 93 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters there had a 26.6-percent success rate.

Elk
Elk hunters harvested 17 elk in District 15 during last year’s general season, and 16 of them came from GMU 651 (Satsop). All 16 were bulls and all were harvested by modern firearms hunters.

Bear
District 15 hunters harvested 117 black bear in 2011, with nearly half (50) of them coming from GMU 621 (Olympic) and 20 each from GMU 624 (Coyle) and GMU 627 (Kitsap).

Cougar
District 15 hunters took five cougar during the 2011 general season, three from GMU 651 (Satsop) once each from GMU 621 (Olympic) and GMU 633 (Mason).

District 16

Big Game

Deer
Deer hunters in District 16 harvested 342 animals, all bucks, during the 2011 general season. Modern firearms hunters accounted for 316 (92 percent) of those bucks and had a 20.8-percent success rate for the season. GMU 603 (Pysht) was the most productive unit in the district, giving up 120 deer.

Elk
All 160 of the elk harvested during last year’s general season in District 16 were bulls, and archers (26 percent), modern firearms hunters (49 percent) and muzzleloader hunters (23 percent) all played an active role in accomplishing that harvest. Hunters harvested 48 elk in GMU 615 (Clearwater), 37 in GMU 602 (Dickey) and 29 in GMU 607 (Sol Duc).

Bear
GMU 603 (Pysht), GMU 607 (Sol Duc) and GMU 615 (Clearwater) produced 36 of the 51 black bear harvested in District 16 during the 2011 season.

Cougar
The only cougar taken in district 16 during the 2011 season came from GMU 612 (Goodman).

District 17

Big Game

Deer
Total deer harvest for general-season hunters in District 17 last year was 1,046, just under 90 percent of them bucks. Modern firearms hunters took 830 of those deer, bow hunters 150, muzzleloader hunters 52 and multiple-weapons hunters 14. Modern firearms hunters had the highest success rate, 17 percent.

Hunters in Game Management Unit 648 (Wynoochee) harvested 266 deer, while GMU 660 (Minot Peak) and GMU 672 (Fall River) produced 175 and 184 deer, respectively. The best hunter success rate among the district’s modern firearms hunters was 30.8 percent, in GMU 684 (Long Beach).

Elk
Bow hunters and modern firearms hunters accounted for over 90 percent of the elk harvest in District 17 during last year’s general seasons. That total harvest was 685 elk, 81 percent of which were bulls. Hunters in GMU 673 (Williams Creek) harvested 193 elk, GMU 658 (North River) 115 and GMU 672 (Fall River) 104.

Bear
Hunters in coastal and southwestern Washington harvested 87 black bear in 2011. That harvest was fairly well spread across all of District 17, but units with double-digit bear harvests included GMU 642 (Copalis), GMU 648 (Wynoochee), GMU 658 (North River), GMU 660 (Minot Peak) and GMU 672 (Fall River).

Cougar
All seven cougar harvested in District 17 during last year’s general season came from GMU 648 (Wynoochee).
