DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT
ON 01-03-11 I WAS ON DUTY FOR THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE. AT APPROXIMATELY 0930 HOURS I RECEIVED A CALL ON MY CELL PHONE FROM THE RP. THE RP SAID HE HAD TWO COWS KILLED BY A COUGAR ON HIS PROPERTY OFF OF BOFER CANYON ROAD IN BENTON COUNTY. HE STATED THE COWS WERE KILLED SOMETIME DURING THE NIGHT ON 12-28-10 AND THE EARLY MORNING OF 12-29-10. HE STATED HE DID NOT SEE ANY TRACKS IN THE AREA AND BOTH ANIMALS HAD WOUNDS TO THEIR NECKS. AT THE TIME OF THE CALL, I WAS OUT OF THE AREA. ON 01-04-11 I RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AND SPOKE WITH THE RP. THE RP TOLD ME HE HAD NEARLY 200 HEAD OF CATTLE ON HIS FARM AND IN THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS HE HAD LOST NEARLY 21 COWS TO AN UNKNOWN VIRUS. HE DID NOT THINK THE TWO COWS HE CALLED ME ABOUT DIED DUE TO THE VIRUS. HE HAD DRUG THE TWO COWS FROM WHERE HE FOUND THEM DEAD TO A CANYON ABOUT A MILE AWAY. WE DROVE DOWN INTO THE CANYON AND I EXAMINED THE TWO COWS. ONE COW HAD WOUNDS TO IT'S NECK/SHOULDER AREA AND THE OTHER HAD WOUNDS ON THE BACK OF IT'S NECK. THERE WERE NO WOUNDS ON THE THROAT AREAS OF BOTH ANIMALS. BOTH ANIMALS WERE ALSO FROZEN SOLID. COUGARS HAVE BEEN SEEN IN THE AREA IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, HOWEVER DUE TO THE TIME DELAY IN REPORTING THE INCIDENT AND LACK OF ANY FURTHER EVIDENCE, THE LIKELIHOOD OF A COUGAR KILLING THESE TWO COWS IS UNLIKELY. THE RP WAS TOLD THAT COUGAR SEASON WAS STILL OPEN AND HE COULD BUY A LICENSE AND TAG AND KILL A COUGAR OUT THERE IF HE SEES ONE. HE WAS TOLD TO CALL BACK IF HE HAD ANY FURTHER PROBLEMS.
