One day razor clam season just announced
OLYMPIA -- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) this
afternoon announced that Long Beach Peninsula and Twin Harbors Beach will be
opened for one additional day of recreational razor clam digging.
The day is next Wednesday, April 15. Digging is allowed only during the a.m.
tide period. The low tide will occur that day at 9:30 a.m.
WDFW biologists said there are sufficient clams remaining in the total allowable
catch for these two beaches only. Razor clam digging will not re-open on Copalis,
Mocrocks or Kalaloch beaches.
The department chose the mid-week day to provide a recreational opportunity
while not creating an over harvest situation. Earlier spring digging opportunities
brought out a record number of diggers.
Digging requires that people age 15 to 69 must have a 1998 Shellfish/Seaweed
license. The cost is $5. Senior resident licenses cost $3. All non-resident licenses are
$20. A resident and non-resident three consecutive day license cost $5.
In addition to the license, diggers are reminded they must keep the first 15 clams
regardless of size or condition. Also, each person's limit must be kept in a separate
container.
