More than 60,000 triploid trout
added to 95 fishing waters
More than 60,000 triploid rainbow trout are being added to 95 fishing waters across Washington this month and next.
Averaging 1.5 pounds each, the trout are called “triploids” because they have three sets of chromosomes instead of the normal two, making them sterile. It also makes the fish voracious feeders with the potential to grow to trophy size. The trout are purchased by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) with a special legislative allocation to enhance fishing opportunities.
“These triploids, along with nearly 52,000 other jumbo trout added to lakes throughout the state, will give anglers a great opportunity to catch a nice-size trout this year,” said Jon Anderson, WDFW resident trout manager.
A majority of the triploid trout are being stocked this month in preparation for the April 29 lowland lakes fishing season opener. Some year-round and earlier-opening fishing waters are also receiving triploids this month or next. The following table shows how many are going where this spring.
