Public survey will gather data for new game management plan

OLYMPIA -- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is conducting a public survey to help identify major wildlife issues that should be addressed in a new game management plan.

The plan will be used as a management tool for the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission and WDFW, which are charged with providing recreational hunting opportunities while conserving wildlife species.

The plan will focus on species management guidelines and will provide population thresholds to help determine hunting season changes and management activities. The comprehensive document will outline WDFW's management philosophies, goals and activities for all hunted species.

Information on Washington's natural environment, public opinions and demographics and WDFW revenue and expenditures also will be included in the plan.

Interested individuals can complete the game management plan survey online at the WDFW website on the Internet.

If preferred, individuals may request a paper copy of the survey by writing to the Wildlife Program's WDFW, 600 Capitol Way N, Olympia, WA 98501-1091. The survey deadline is May 15, 2001. The public will have opportunities to provide additional input at later stages of the plan's development, as well.
