Sport shrimp fishing days altered from Vashon to Deception Pass

Fishers are reminded that weekly fishing days for the Puget Sound recreational shrimp fishery will be trimmed from seven days a week to four beginning May 1 in marine areas 8-1, 8-2, 9 and 10.

Fishing for all shrimp species will be open Thursdays through Sundays only and will be closed Mondays through Wednesdays.

The recreational shrimp fishery opened April 14.

The change in fishing days, approved by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission in February, was made to allow a longer recreational season for spot shrimp in Marine Areas 8 through 10 (the area of Puget Sound that extends from the north end of Vashon Island to the north end of Whidbey Island).

Recreational shrimp fishing effort increased 67 percent in these areas during last year's fishing season.

The spot shrimp fishery in marine areas 8 through 10 will continue until the recreational harvest share is taken, likely sometime in late May. After the spot shrimp fishery closes, certain areas may re-open to allow harvest of other shrimp species (mainly coonstripe), with the four day per week open period remaining in effect.

In-season changes to the recreational shrimp fishery can be found on the Fishing section of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) web page at /fishing/regulations or on the WDFW shellfish rule change hotline at (360) 796-3215.

The new fishing days rule can be found on page 54 of the WDFW 2001-02 Fishing in Washington sport rules pamphlet.
