Salmon saving stream improvements funded
OLYMPIA-- More than 100 projects to improve conditions for wild salmon in streams across the state soon will be underway with $6.7 million in funding awarded last week by the state Interagency Review Team (IRT). The salmon recovery funding package included nearly $4.1 million in habitat restoration projects and close to $2.6 million in fish passage improvements. The money comes from capital funding authorized by the 1999 Legislature. Improvements to be made with the newly awarded funds include replanting streamside vegetation, adding gravel and other stream features which provide spawning areas or protect fish, and correcting poorly designed culverts which block fish passage. Projects receiving funding are to be completed by the end of next May. "Projects selected for funding all had a strong scientific basis and responded to specific factors in local streams that limit salmon recovery," said Tim Smith, IRT chairman. "The success of this approach to salmon recovery hinges on the combined efforts of citizens with knowledge of local stream conditions and professionals involved in fish science." The IRT is comprised of representatives from the Washington departments of Fish and Wildife, Transportation, Ecology and Natural Resources, as well as the Conservation Commission. The directors of those agencies will continue to participate on a non-voting basis when salmon recovery funding administration is transferred to the state's Salmon Recovery Funding Board later this month. For a complete list of funded projects, see the attached list.
