Fishing pamphlet errs on some Grays Harbor salmon seasons
OLYMPIA -- The 1997 Fishing in Washington regulation pamphlet contains
several errors regarding Grays Harbor rivers, the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife has cautioned salmon anglers.
The pamphlet erroneously lists as open the Elk, Johns, Hoquiam and Wishkah
rivers as well as the Humptulips above Highway 101. In fact, the rivers are closed to
protect weak wild coho runs expected this year.
Salmon fishing is available in the following Grays Harbor areas:
- Grays Harbor Marine Area 2.2 (east of the Buoy 13 line): Opens Sept. 1-
30; six salmon daily limit, no more than two of which may be adults; adult coho must be
released; single pointed barbless hooks required.
- Westport Boat Basin: Open Saturday (Aug. 16) through Jan. 31; six salmon
daily limit of which no more than four may be adults; night closure and non-buoyant lure
restrictions in effect; barbed hooks allowed.
- Humptulips River (mouth to Highway 101 bridge): Open Sept. 1 through
Oct. 15; six salmon daily limit of which two may be adults (coho may be retained); night
closure and non-buoyant lure restrictions in effect.
- Chehalis River (from Highway 101 bridge at Aberdeen to Porter Bridge):
Open Sept. 1 - 30; six salmon daily limit of which not more than two may be adults;
release adult coho; single pointed barbless hooks required.
- Wynoochee River (mouth to 7400 Line Bridge above the mouth of Schafer
Creek): Open Sept. 1 through Oct. 31; six salmon daily limit of which not more than two
may be adults; release adult coho; single pointed barbless hooks required.
- Satsop River and E. Fork of Satsop (from mouth to the bridge at Schafer
State Park): Open Oct. 10 through Nov. 2; six salmon daily limit of which not more than
two may be adults; coho may be retained; night closure and non-buoyant lure
restrictions in effect.
Adult chinook are 24 inches or more in length; adult coho are 20 inches or more
in length and pink, chum and sockeye adults are at least 12 inches long.
