Swakane closure for wildfire lifted
WENATCHEE - The recent closure for wildfire safety of the Swakane unit of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Chelan Wildlife Area in northcentral Washington has been lifted.
Several days of rain and cooler temperatures have brought the nearby Fischer fire to 95 percent containment and virtually eliminated chances of its spread to WDFW property.
WDFW Chelan Wildlife Area Manager Marc Hallet said that open campfires are still prohibited throughout the wildlife area, however.
The area's 8,500-acre Swakane unit, about two miles north of Wenatchee, was closed last week to all entry except firefighters or other WDFW-authorized individuals. Adjacent U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service lands were also closed then and are now re-opened.
