Some Puget Sound clam, oyster seasons curtailed
OLYMPIA--Recreational clam and oyster seasons will be curtailed on several
Puget Sound beaches to protect smaller-than-normal populations of shellfish, the
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced.
All the following changes will take effect Jan. 1:
- Oyster harvesting will close until March 1 at Dosewallips State Park and Potlatch
State Park. Additionally, oyster harvesting will close until further notice at Point Whitney
Tidelands.
- Clam harvesting will close until March 1 at Dosewallips State Park, Potlatch
Department of Natural Resources Tidelands and Potlatch State Park. Also, clam
harvesting will close until further notice at Cline Spit, Oak Bay County Park and Sequim
Bay State Park (north and south sections).
- Clam harvesting will be open from Jan. 1 through April 30 at Mystery Bay State
Park.
The season changes differ from listings in the 1998 edition of the WDFW
"Fishing in Washington" pamphlet. Updates to recreational shellfish regulations can be
heard on the shellfish emergency regulation hotline at (360) 796-3215.
Recreational clam and oyster harvesting requires a shellfish/seaweed license.
Shellfish harvesters should check the Marine Toxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632 before
taking shellfish.
