Rare bird visitor featured on TCTV

OLYMPIA - A bird native to Europe and Asia that flew off course and briefly took up residence in an Olympia neighborhood is featured this month on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) television program, "Wild About Washington."

Viewers will learn something about the bird, a redwing thrush, and what might have caused it to stray so far from its usual migration route. The economic benefits from the hundreds of "birders" who have come here to see the bird are explained by the executive director of the Olympia Thurston County Visitors and Convention Bureau.

Also featured in the program are the research efforts of WDFW employee Anne Schmidt, who has been studying the lifecycle and habitat needs of native gophers that populate the remaining southern Puget Sound prairie habitat.

"Wild About Washington" can be viewed on TCTV (cable channel 3) at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, 6 p.m. on Thursdays, and 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

The February edition of the show also features an explanation of the upcoming meetings that will establish salmon-fishing seasons for the coming year as well as fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities during the coming weeks.
